Minecraft Enchantments: What All 43 Do and How to Get Them
Minecraft 1.21.11 has 43 enchantments on Java and 42 on Bedrock. Per-level numbers, conflicts, treasure-only enchantments and the best picks for your gear.
As of 1.21.11, Minecraft has 43 enchantments in Java and 42 in Bedrock, because Sweeping Edge is Java-only. The newest is Lunge, added for the spear in Java 1.21.11 and Bedrock 1.21.130. This section has a page for each one with the actual numbers per level, the gear it goes on, what it conflicts with and the cheapest way to get it, plus “best enchantments” guides for each weapon and armor slot.
If you only want the master table, start with the complete list of enchantments. If you want to know what to put on your gear, jump to the best sword enchantments or best armor enchantments.
Three ways to enchant
Most players use all three, in this order:
- Enchanting table. Build an enchanting table, surround it with 15 bookshelves and you get level-30 offers. Each enchant costs 1 to 3 lapis and 1 to 3 levels. The results are random and you can’t pick the enchantment, only see one hint of it.
- Anvil and books. An anvil lets you add exactly the enchantment you want from a book, or merge two items. Every anvil use raises the cost of the next one, and anything over 39 levels shows “Too Expensive!”. Our guide to using enchanted books covers the right order to combine them.
- Librarian villagers. A librarian sells one enchanted book per trade slot, and you can reroll a fresh one by breaking and replacing its lectern before you trade with it. This is how most people get Mending. See all villager jobs for the workstation setup.
Loot chests, fishing and mob drops fill in the rest.
Treasure enchantments
Some enchantments never show up on the enchanting table. Mending, Frost Walker and both curses come from librarians, fishing and chests. Soul Speed comes from piglin bartering and bastion chests, Swift Sneak only from ancient city chests, and Wind Burst only from ominous vaults in trial chambers.
Conflicts worth memorizing
You can only have one from each of these groups on a single item: Sharpness, Smite and Bane of Arthropods (plus Density and Breach on a mace); the four Protection types; Fortune and Silk Touch; Infinity and Mending; Multishot and Piercing; Depth Strider and Frost Walker; Riptide with either Loyalty or Channeling.
Java vs Bedrock in one paragraph
The editions mostly match, but a few differences matter. Sharpness adds more damage per level on Bedrock. Impaling hits anything that is wet on Bedrock but only aquatic mobs on Java. Sweeping Edge doesn’t exist on Bedrock. Mending books also drop from raid mobs on Bedrock. Both editions have the experimental Villager Trade Rebalance, which ties librarian books to the village biome; it is off unless you turn it on when creating the world.
Need to undo something? Removing enchantments with a grindstone gives back some XP, but curses stay. For command users there is an enchantment ID list that works with the /enchant command.
