Luck of the Sea: Fishing Treasure Odds Per Level

Luck of the Sea III raises fishing treasure from 5% to 11.3% and cuts junk from 10% to 4.2%. Odds by level, what counts as treasure, best rod setup.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Luck of the Sea makes fishing pull up more treasure and less junk. At level III, the treasure chance goes from 5% to about 11.3%, and junk drops from 10% to 4.2%. It goes on fishing rods and has three levels.

Catch type No enchant I II III
Fish 85% 84.8% 84.7% 84.5%
Treasure 5% 7.1% 9.2% 11.3%
Junk 10% 8.1% 6.1% 4.2%

Fish barely change. The trade is almost entirely junk for treasure: each level adds about 2.1 points of treasure and takes about 1.95 points off junk.

What counts as treasure

  • Enchanted books (any level, including treasure enchantments like Mending and Frost Walker)
  • Enchanted bows and fishing rods
  • Name tags (see how to get a name tag for other sources)
  • Saddles (how to get a saddle covers the alternatives)
  • Nautilus shells, used for conduits
  • Lily pads

Fished books roll like a level 30 enchanting table, except that treasure enchantments can appear and the chance of extra enchantments isn’t reduced. Swift Sneak, Soul Speed and Wind Burst never show up this way. Fished bows and rods are enchanted at a random level from 22 to 30, but they come out with only 0 to 25% of their durability left, so they’re mostly anvil fodder.

On Java, treasure only shows up in open water: the 5×4×5 area around the bobber has to be clear water or air (lily pads are fine), with no blocks in it. In a tiny pond or a 1×1 AFK fishing hole you’ll only get fish and junk. Bedrock doesn’t have this rule.

What to expect per hour

Books are about one treasure catch in six on Java (a little more on Bedrock). With Luck of the Sea III, that works out to roughly 1 enchanted book every 50 catches. A rod with Lure III lands a few hundred catches an hour in good conditions, so expect a handful of books per hour, not a chestful. It’s still one of the steadiest ways to get Mending without a villager.

Getting it

The enchanting table rolls Luck of the Sea on fishing rods, though its weight is low (2) and a rod often comes out with Lure or Unbreaking instead. Books come from fishing, monster rooms and other chests, and treasure rods sometimes come with it already on. Librarians sell it in default trading; the experimental Villager Trade Rebalance removes fishing rod enchantments from librarians.

Building the rod

Put Luck of the Sea III next to Lure III, Unbreaking III and Mending. The two fishing enchantments don’t conflict, and Mending keeps the rod going on the XP every catch gives. See the fishing guide for where to cast.

Common questions

Does Luck of the Sea help you get Mending?

Yes, indirectly. Enchanted books are one of the treasure catches, and Luck of the Sea more than doubles your treasure rate, so you fish up more books, some of which carry Mending.

Should I use Luck of the Sea or Lure?

Both. They don't conflict. Lure speeds up bites and Luck of the Sea improves what you catch.
