Minecraft Servers and Multiplayer: Join, Host or Rent
Every way to play Minecraft with other people: public servers, Realms, LAN and hosting your own, plus plain explainers on Hypixel, 2b2t and SMPs.
Minecraft multiplayer comes in four flavors: public servers anyone can join, Realms (Mojang’s paid private servers), LAN games on the same Wi-Fi, and servers you host yourself. Which one fits depends on your edition, your budget and how many friends you’re bringing. If you’re not sure where to start, read how to play Minecraft multiplayer first. It compares all four methods side by side.

- Joining someone else’s server? How to join a Minecraft server covers adding an address on Java and Bedrock, version matching and the usual connection errors.
- Playing with a small friend group? Minecraft Realms is the zero-setup option. It costs a monthly fee but nobody has to keep a PC running.
- Want full control? How to make a Minecraft server walks through the official Java server and the Bedrock Dedicated Server, and free server hosting explains what you actually get when you don’t pay.
The famous servers, explained
Some servers are big enough that people search for them by name. We explain what they are and what to expect, not which one to pick:
- Hypixel, the largest Java minigame network (Bed Wars, SkyBlock, SkyWars).
- 2b2t, the anarchy server that has run on one unreset map since 2010.
- Earth servers like EarthMC, where players found towns on a scaled map of the real world.
- What an SMP is, the survival multiplayer format behind most community and YouTuber servers.
A note on server lists and ping
We don’t publish lists of server IPs or player counts. Servers close, change hands and get copied by scam lookalikes, so a list goes stale within months. Instead, our guides show you how to check an address against a server’s own website or Discord and how to read ping in the server list.
Ping matters more than anything else if you play from South Asia. Most big networks host in North America or Europe, so expect noticeable delay unless a server has a nearby region. Our page on finding good servers from Bangladesh explains how to judge latency by region. If multiplayer won’t connect at all, the can’t connect to world fixes cover the Bedrock friend-join errors.
