Curse of Vanishing: What Happens to the Item When You Die

Curse of Vanishing deletes an item when you die instead of dropping it. When it doesn't trigger, why you can't remove it, and when it's actually harmless.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Curse of Vanishing makes an item disappear when you die. Normal items spill on the ground where you died so you can go back for them; a vanishing item is deleted instead. It can go on almost any enchantable item, from armor and swords to compasses and carved pumpkins, which makes it the most widely applicable enchantment in the game.

When it does and doesn’t trigger

The item vanishes if it’s anywhere in your inventory when you die. It does not vanish if:

  • you drop it on purpose before dying, or put it in a chest;
  • it’s inside a shulker box or bundle in your inventory;
  • The keep inventory game rule is on (keep_inventory on Java 1.21.11+, keepInventory on Bedrock).

Mobs follow the same rule. A zombie wearing cursed armor never drops it.

Can you get rid of it?

For anything that isn’t a block, no. A grindstone strips every enchantment except curses, and so does combining two items in a crafting grid. An anvil can’t remove it either. Your choices are to live with it or replace the item.

Block items are the exception: place a cursed carved pumpkin or mob head and break it, and it comes back clean.

Where it comes from

It’s a treasure enchantment. You’ll find it on fished-up books and gear, in loot chests from non-village structures, on Bedrock raid drops, and from librarians. Under the experimental Villager Trade Rebalance, swamp librarians sell it. It never comes from the enchanting table, so you’ll mostly meet it on gear you looted.

How much should you care?

It depends on how often you die and how far from home you go.

  • On a good item you’ll keep for a long time: annoying, but it doesn’t change anything while you’re alive. If you rarely die, a Mending netherite pickaxe with Vanishing is still a great pickaxe.
  • On a PvP or SMP server: it stops other players from looting your best gear after killing you, which some people like.
  • In Hardcore: irrelevant, since death ends the world.

For the other curse, which locks armor in place, see Curse of Binding. For stripping normal enchantments, see how to remove enchantments.

Common questions

Can you remove Curse of Vanishing?

Not from tools, weapons or armor. A grindstone and the crafting repair recipe both keep curses. The only exceptions are block items like a carved pumpkin or mob head: placing the block clears the curse.

Does Curse of Vanishing work with keep inventory on?

No. With the keep inventory game rule turned on you keep everything when you die, including cursed items, so the curse never triggers.
