Protection Enchantment: Damage Reduction Math Explained
Protection IV cuts 16% of damage per piece, 64% on a full set, capped at 80%. How it stacks with other protection types, Java vs Bedrock, getting it.
Protection reduces almost all incoming damage by 4% per level on each armor piece. Protection IV on all four pieces gives 64% reduction, applied after your armor points have done their work. It’s the best general armor enchantment in the game and the one you should put on your main set.
The math
The game adds up an “enchantment protection factor” (EPF) from all your armor. Protection gives 1 EPF per level. Each EPF point cuts damage by 4%, and the total is capped at 20 EPF, which is 80%.
| Setup | EPF vs general damage | Reduction |
|---|---|---|
| One piece of Protection IV | 4 | 16% |
| Two pieces | 8 | 32% |
| Three pieces | 12 | 48% |
| Full set | 16 | 64% |
It doesn’t matter which slot the enchantment is on. Protection IV on your boots protects your head the same as on your helmet.
Protection works against nearly everything, including fall damage and magic damage like poison, which plain armor ignores. The exceptions are starvation, the void, /kill and the Warden’s sonic boom.
Stacking with the specialized types
Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection give 2 EPF per level, but only against their own damage type. Feather Falling gives 3 per level against falls. They all add into the same 20-point cap. Three pieces of Protection IV plus one Blast Protection IV gives 48% against everything and the full 80% against explosions.
Protection on Java vs Bedrock
The editions now match. Bedrock used to give 5% per level, and Protection didn’t reduce magic damage there. Bedrock 1.18.30 changed both to match Java. Older guides that say Bedrock Protection is stronger are out of date.
What it conflicts with
Each armor piece can have only one of Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection. Everything else (Unbreaking, Mending, Thorns, the helmet and boot enchantments) can sit alongside it.
How to get Protection IV
It rolls on the enchanting table for any armor, and it’s one of the most common results, so a level-30 enchant on diamond armor often gives Protection IV right away. Otherwise, merge two Protection III books on an anvil, buy a book from a librarian, or loot it. Armor dropped by zombies and skeletons sometimes has it too.
Under the experimental Villager Trade Rebalance, Protection IV is the special master-level book of plains librarians.

Common questions
How much does full Protection IV reduce damage?
Four pieces of Protection IV give 64% damage reduction on top of what the armor itself blocks. The maximum from all protection enchantments combined is 80%.
Is Protection different on Bedrock?
Not anymore. Bedrock used 5% per level until version 1.18.30, then changed to 4% per level to match Java. Both editions now use the same math.
Is Protection better than Blast or Fire Protection?
For everyday armor, yes, because it works against almost every damage type. Use the specialized versions on a second set for specific jobs like fighting the Wither or the Nether.
