Enchanted Golden Apple: Effects and Where to Find One
The enchanted golden apple gives Absorption IV, Regeneration II, Resistance and Fire Resistance, and it can't be crafted. Chest odds and when to eat it.
An enchanted golden apple (the “god apple” or “Notch apple”) is the strongest food in Minecraft. Eating one gives you Absorption IV, Regeneration II, Resistance and Fire Resistance at once. It can’t be crafted, so the only way to get one is from loot chests and trial chamber vaults.
Despite the name and the glint, it isn’t actually enchanted, and it has nothing to do with enchanting tables. It just lives in this section for historical reasons.
What an enchanted golden apple does

It also restores 4 hunger points and 9.6 saturation. The 5 minutes of Fire Resistance means you can swim in lava, and Absorption IV soaks up a full extra health bar.
Where to find an enchanted golden apple
Every chance below is per chest or vault, for Java Edition; Bedrock is the same except where noted.

Ominous vaults are the best repeatable source if you’re already running trial chambers with ominous keys. Mineshafts and dungeons are common enough that you’ll eventually find one by accident.
When to eat it
Save it for the fights where everything goes wrong at once:
- The Wither. Absorption and Resistance cover its explosions and wither effect while you swing.
- Raids with ravagers and evokers on later waves.
- Ancient cities if a warden shows up and you need to run.
- Emergency lava escapes, thanks to Fire Resistance.
Regular golden apples are craftable from gold ingots and an apple and are good enough for most fights. They’re also what you feed a weakened zombie villager to cure it. The enchanted version doesn’t work for that, so don’t waste one trying.
Its other uses
- The Thing banner pattern. Craft an enchanted golden apple with paper to get the banner pattern with the old Mojang logo.
- Horses. It can be fed to horses to help with taming, breeding and growth.
Piglins love it as well: drop one near a piglin and it’ll pick it up and keep it, but it won’t trade or eat it.

Can you craft an enchanted golden apple?
No. The old recipe using 8 gold blocks and an apple was removed in Java 1.9 in 2016. Enchanted golden apples only come from loot chests and vaults now.
What is the difference between a golden apple and an enchanted golden apple?
A golden apple is craftable and gives Regeneration II for 5 seconds plus Absorption I. The enchanted version gives Absorption IV, a longer Regeneration II, and 5 minutes each of Resistance and Fire Resistance.
