The complete enchantment list has max levels and conflicts for each one.
Using them with /enchant
The /enchant command adds an enchantment to the item in the target’s main hand:
/enchant @s minecraft:sharpness 5 (Java)
/enchant @s sharpness 5 (Bedrock)
/enchant @s 9 5 (Bedrock, numeric)
It respects the normal rules: no levels above the max, no conflicting enchantments, and the item has to be able to take that enchantment.
Going past the limits with /give
To make something like Sharpness 10 or an Infinity-plus-Mending bow, use the /give command instead.
On Java 1.21.5 and later, enchantments are a simple map in the item component:
/give @s diamond_sword[enchantments={"minecraft:sharpness":10,"minecraft:looting":5}]
Java 1.20.5 to 1.21.4 wrapped that map in a levels field: [enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:sharpness":10}}]. Older tutorials using {Enchantments:[{id:...,lvl:...}]} NBT are for 1.20.4 and earlier and no longer work.
Bedrock’s /give can’t add enchantments, and /enchant stops at the normal maximum, so over-leveled gear on Bedrock needs add-ons. Running these commands from a command block works the same way as typing them in chat.
Common questions
Why does /enchant say the level is too high?
The /enchant command refuses levels above an enchantment's normal maximum and won't add conflicting enchantments. To go past those limits, use /give with the enchantments component on Java, or /give with item data on Bedrock.
What is the Curse of Binding ID?
On Java it's minecraft:binding_curse. On Bedrock it's binding, numeric ID 27. Curse of Vanishing is minecraft:vanishing_curse on Java and vanishing (28) on Bedrock.
