Wind Burst Enchantment: Mace Launch Height, How to Get It

Wind Burst launches you about 8, 16 or 24 blocks up after a mace smash. It only drops at level I, from ominous vaults. Finding, combining and using it.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Wind Burst launches you back into the air every time you land a mace smash attack. It adds roughly 8 blocks of upward launch at level I, 16 at level II and 24 at level III, which lets you chain smash after smash without touching the ground.

It is one of the rarest enchantments in the game. The only source is the ominous vault in trial chambers, and it only drops at level I.

Getting Wind Burst

  1. Find a trial chamber and fight through an ominous trial (drink an ominous bottle, then trigger the spawners). Defeated ominous spawners give ominous trial keys.
  2. Use a key on an ominous vault. Each vault has about a 5.5% chance to give a Wind Burst I book.
  3. Collect four books and combine them on an anvil: I + I = II, then II + II = III.

Librarians never sell it, fishing can’t give it and the enchanting table won’t roll it. Use your mace’s first anvil slots wisely: apply the finished III book in one step rather than upgrading on the mace itself, to keep the prior work penalty down.

How Wind Burst works

You need a real smash attack, which means falling more than 1.5 blocks before you hit. Jumping off a single block and hitting just before you land is enough, and so is a wind charge or Jump Boost. Normal ground hits never trigger it.

Level Approximate launch height
I 8 blocks
II 16 blocks
III 24 blocks

On Java, Blast Protection on your armor reduces the launch; on Bedrock, netherite armor does. On Java, Wind Burst I usually can’t keep a chain going on a target at the same height, because the mace’s attack cooldown hasn’t recovered by the time you land. Level III fixes that.

Building around it

Wind Burst has no conflicts, so it fits with either Density or Breach, plus Unbreaking and Mending. The launch does not cancel fall damage, so wear Feather Falling IV boots and keep wind charges from breezes on hand for when you miss.

Common questions

How do you get Wind Burst in Minecraft?

Only from ominous vaults in trial chambers, opened with an ominous trial key. Each vault has about a 5.5% chance to eject a Wind Burst I book. Villagers don't sell it and the enchanting table can't roll it.

How do you get Wind Burst III?

Combine two Wind Burst I books on an anvil to make II, then two II books to make III. That takes four Wind Burst I books in total.

Does Wind Burst stop fall damage?

No. Unlike a wind charge, the launch from Wind Burst does not reset or cancel fall damage, so you still take damage if you land without hitting something.
