Minecraft Classic is a free, official browser version of Minecraft as it was in 2009. Press Play above (or open classic.minecraft.net) on a computer, pick a name and you’re building within seconds, with no account and no download. Mojang released it in May 2019 for the game’s tenth anniversary, recreating Classic version 0.0.23a_01 in JavaScript.
It’s creative mode only: no survival, no crafting, no mobs. Treat it as a small piece of history you can play with friends, not a free substitute for the full game.
Starting a world
- Go to classic.minecraft.net in a desktop browser. It needs a keyboard and WebGL support, so phones and most tablets won’t work.
- Enter a username. It doesn’t need to match any account.
- Click Start. A new world generates and you spawn in the middle of it.
Building with friends
The page gives you an invite link once your world is running. Send it to friends, and up to nine of them can join from their own browsers, again with no accounts. The world lasts while the host keeps the tab open, so don’t close it mid-build.
Controls
The controls are close to the modern game, with one exception (the block menu):
- WASD to move, Space to jump, mouse to look
- Left click to break a block, right click to place one
- B opens the block menu
- Enter opens chat
What’s missing
Everything you’d recognize from the current game beyond blocks: health, hunger, tools, mobs, redstone, the Nether. Worlds are small, and the block list is a short set of stone, wood, glass, wool colors and a few others.
