Fire Protection Enchantment: Lava, Fire and Burn Time
Fire Protection cuts fire and lava damage by 8% per level per piece and shortens burning by 15% per level. When it beats Protection, and getting it.
Fire Protection reduces fire damage by 8% per level on each armor piece, so Fire Protection IV blocks 32% per piece. It also shortens how long you burn by 15% per level, and that part stacks across your armor. It covers fire, lava, magma blocks, campfires, blaze fireballs, flaming arrows and burning attackers.
How much it helps
Fire Protection gives 2 protection points (EPF) per level, twice what Protection gives, but only against fire. The total from all your armor is capped at 80%.
| Fire Protection IV pieces | Fire damage reduction |
|---|---|
| 1 | 32% |
| 2 | 64% |
| 3 | 80% (cap) |
You hit the cap with 10 total levels of Fire Protection, or with three Protection IV pieces plus one Fire Protection IV. That last combo is a good Nether set: 48% against everything, 80% against fire.
The burn-time reduction adds up across pieces. Once your Fire Protection levels total 7 or more (say, IV on one piece and III on another), you stop burning almost as soon as you leave the fire.
What Fire Protection doesn’t do
It doesn’t make you immune to lava. Even at the 80% cap, swimming in lava drains you in seconds. A Fire Resistance potion does make you immune, and it’s cheap to brew from magma cream. Fire Protection is what keeps you alive in the gap: the potion running out, a surprise lava pocket, or a long fight with blazes.
It also conflicts with Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection on the same piece.
Getting it
Fire Protection is common from the enchanting table on any armor. Books come from fishing, trial chamber vaults, loot chests and librarians. With the experimental Villager Trade Rebalance, desert librarians are the ones that sell it.
When to use it
Most players never need a full Fire Protection set. One piece on otherwise Protection IV armor is a reasonable choice if you spend a lot of time in nether fortresses or bastions. Speedrunners and players mining ancient debris near lava lakes like it more than anyone. See best armor enchantments for where it fits.
Common questions
Is Fire Protection better than Protection?
Only against fire. Fire Protection IV blocks 32% of fire damage per piece versus 16% from Protection IV, but it does nothing against mobs, falls or explosions. Keep Protection on your main armor.
Does Fire Protection stop blaze fireballs?
Yes. Blaze fireballs count as fire damage, and Projectile Protection also reduces them. Ghast fireballs are different: the impact is projectile damage and the blast is explosion damage.
