Lure Enchantment: How Much Faster You Catch Fish
Lure cuts fishing wait time by 5 seconds per level, so Lure III turns a 5 to 30 second wait into 0 to 15. Why location matters, and Luck of the Sea.
Lure makes fish bite sooner. Normally you wait 5 to 30 seconds after casting before something takes the hook. Each level of Lure takes 5 seconds off both ends of that range, so Lure III cuts it to 0 to 15 seconds. It only goes on fishing rods and has three levels.
| Level | Wait before a bite |
|---|---|
| None | 5–30 s |
| I | 0–25 s |
| II | 0–20 s |
| III | 0–15 s |
After the wait, fish particles still take 1 to 4 seconds to swim to your bobber, so Lure III doesn’t mean instant catches, but it roughly halves your time per catch.
Where you fish matters as much
| Condition | Effect on wait time |
|---|---|
| Open sky above the bobber | Normal |
| No direct sky (leaves, ice or solid blocks overhead) | About double |
| Rain falling on the bobber | About 20% shorter |
Glass and carpet above the bobber count as open sky; leaves and ice don’t. Clouds don’t matter. Rain only helps if it’s actually raining in that biome and nothing above the bobber blocks it.
So the best spot is open water with nothing overhead, ideally during a storm. A fishing hut with a glass roof keeps the rain off you and only costs you the rain bonus. Fish under a solid roof and you throw away most of what Lure gives you.
What Lure doesn’t do
Lure doesn’t change what you catch. On Java before 1.9 it nudged catches toward fish at the cost of treasure and junk, and a lot of old guides still repeat that. Today the loot odds come only from Luck of the Sea and, on Java, whether you’re fishing in open water.
Lure also caps out in a strange way. If you push it past level V with commands, the bite timer never starts and nothing bites at all.
Getting Lure
Lure rolls on the enchanting table for fishing rods, and rods fished up as treasure often come with it. Books come from fishing, monster rooms and other chests. Librarians sell Lure in the default trades, but the experimental Villager Trade Rebalance removes fishing rod enchantments from trading.
The full fishing rod
Lure and Luck of the Sea don’t conflict, and together they’re the AFK fishing setup: Lure III, Luck of the Sea III, Unbreaking III and Mending. Every catch drops XP, so a Mending rod repairs itself as you fish.
That rod pulls up enchanted books, name tags, saddles and nautilus shells steadily. Our fishing guide covers the basics, and a few barrels next to your spot keep the junk sorted. You can make the rod itself with three sticks and two string; the fishing rod recipe has the layout.
Common questions
Does Lure give better loot?
No. Lure only makes things bite sooner. To improve what you catch, use Luck of the Sea.
Can you get Lure higher than III?
Not in survival. With commands, Lure above level V breaks fishing completely: nothing ever bites.
