Put Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending on every armor piece, then the slot extras: Respiration, Aqua Affinity, Swift Sneak, Feather Falling.

Every armor piece should have Protection IV, Unbreaking III and Mending. On top of that, each slot has its own extras: Respiration and Aqua Affinity on the helmet, Swift Sneak on the leggings, and Feather Falling and Depth Strider on the boots.

Slot by slot

Slot Core Extras
Helmet Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending Respiration III, Aqua Affinity
Chestplate Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending Thorns III (optional)
Leggings Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending Swift Sneak III
Boots Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III

Why Protection on all four

Protection IV cuts 16% of damage per piece, 64% across a full set, against nearly everything: mobs, falls, fire, explosions, magic. The specialized versions are twice as strong but only against one damage type:

  • Fire Protection for fire and lava
  • Blast Protection for explosions, and on Java it also reduces explosion knockback
  • Projectile Protection for arrows, tridents and fireballs

They all conflict with each other, one per piece. A common compromise is three Protection IV pieces and one specialized piece, which keeps 48% general reduction and reaches the 80% cap against that one damage type. For the Wither, swap in Blast Protection; for a long Nether trip, Fire Protection.

The slot-specific picks

Helmet. Respiration III gives about 64 seconds of air instead of 16, and Aqua Affinity removes the underwater mining penalty. Both are free; nothing else competes for the helmet.

Chestplate. Thorns is the only extra. Take it only with Mending. If you use elytra, they replace the chestplate while flying; see best elytra enchantments.

Leggings. Swift Sneak raises sneaking speed by 15% of walking speed per level, up to 75% at level III. It only comes from chests in ancient cities, so it’s a late-game add, but it makes bridging and sneaking past wardens much faster.

Boots. Feather Falling IV is the most important boot enchantment: it cuts fall damage nearly in half and stacks with Protection. Depth Strider III lets you walk underwater at land speed. Frost Walker conflicts with Depth Strider, so it belongs on a spare pair. Soul Speed III makes you fast on soul sand and soul soil and comes from piglin bartering; it’s good if you live in the Nether, but it wears your boots faster while active.

Getting it all

Enchant each piece on a level-30 table first; Protection IV comes up often on its own. Then buy or fish the rest: Mending from a librarian, Feather Falling at a level-22 table on boots where it’s most common. Combine books before putting them on the armor to avoid “Too Expensive!” on the anvil.

Which material? Netherite has the most armor and toughness, but the enchantments are the same on any tier. Diamond armor with these enchantments is already endgame-ready.

Common questions

Is Protection or Blast Protection better?

Protection, for everyday armor. It reduces almost every damage type, while Blast Protection only helps against explosions. Keep a second set with specialized protection for jobs like fighting the Wither.

Is Thorns worth it on armor?

Only on armor that has Mending. Thorns costs extra durability every time it triggers, and its damage is small.

What is the best boot enchantment?

Feather Falling IV. After that, Protection IV, Depth Strider III, Unbreaking III and Mending.
