Minecraft Biomes: Where to Build and What Each One Has

The Minecraft biomes worth knowing: what generates in each, the mobs only found there, their loot and resources, and which biomes make the best first base.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

A biome decides what you can get without traveling: which trees grow, which animals spawn, which structures generate and whether it ever rains. Knowing the main biomes saves you hours of wandering, because almost every rare item in the game is tied to one of them.

Each page below covers one biome: how to recognize and find it, the mobs and blocks that make it different, the structures inside it, and whether it’s a good place to live.

If you’re picking a first base

The safe answer is the edge where a forest meets the plains. You get wood, flat land for farms, animals for food and wool, and villages to trade with. A taiga works almost as well and adds foxes and sweet berries. The savanna is the warm, open alternative with horses, llamas and armadillos.

Harder starts: the desert has no wood and lots of husks, the jungle is slow to move through, and the swamp is full of slimes and witches at night. All three are still worth visiting.

Biomes worth a trip

  • Badlands for gold ore near the surface and every color of terracotta.
  • Cherry grove for pink cherry wood, found high in the mountains.
  • Mushroom fields, a rare ocean island where hostile mobs don’t spawn naturally.
  • Desert for pyramids with diamonds and nine free TNT.
  • Jungle for pandas, parrots, cocoa beans and jungle temples.

Underground biomes

Since 1.18, caves have biomes of their own. Lush caves sit under azalea trees and are full of moss, glow berries and axolotls. The deep dark lies far below Y 0, covered in sculk, and it’s where the Warden and ancient cities are. Java 26.2 and Bedrock 26.30 added another, the sulfur caves: yellow sulfur and red cinnabar bands, water pools with potent sulfur geysers, cave spiders and a new passive mob, the sulfur cube.

Finding a specific biome

Explore with a map, or pick a world seed that puts the biome you want near spawn; our guide to finding and using seeds explains how. With cheats enabled, the /locate command gives you exact coordinates: /locate biome minecraft:cherry_grove.

Biomes also decide where structures appear, so if you’re hunting loot rather than scenery, the structures guide is the next stop.
