Mushroom Fields Biome in Minecraft: The No-Monster Island

Mushroom fields are rare ocean islands where hostile mobs never spawn naturally, caves included since 1.18. Finding one, mooshrooms, mycelium, base tips.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Mushroom fields are rare island biomes covered in mycelium and giant mushrooms, and they’re the one place in the Overworld where hostile mobs don’t spawn naturally. Since 1.18 that also applies to the caves underneath them, unless a lush cave generates there. They always form in deep ocean, usually far from the mainland.

Finding a mushroom fields island

There’s no shortcut in survival. Mushroom fields cover roughly 0.14% of the Overworld, so you’ll need to sail. Build a boat and head out across deep ocean, and carry a map so you can track where you’ve already searched.

From the water, look for an island with gray-purple ground and huge red or brown mushroom caps. With cheats, /locate biome minecraft:mushroom_fields finds the nearest.

What lives there

The only mobs that spawn naturally are mooshrooms (plus glow squid in water and bats in caves). Mooshrooms are red or brown mushroom cows:

  • Milk them with a bucket for milk, or with a bowl for mushroom stew.
  • Shear one for five mushrooms. It turns into a regular cow, so don’t overdo it.
  • A brown mooshroom fed a flower gives suspicious stew with that flower’s effect.
  • If lightning strikes a mooshroom, it switches between red and brown.

The no-monster rule, and its limits

Zombies, skeletons, creepers and spiders don’t spawn here. The exceptions are worth knowing:

  • Spawners in dungeons or mineshafts under the island still work.
  • Phantoms still come if you skip sleep.
  • Raids still happen if you bring Bad Omen home.
  • Mobs that walk or swim in from elsewhere. Drowned can wander in from surrounding ocean.
  • Lush caves under the island do allow normal spawning.

Wandering traders also show up normally.

Mycelium and huge mushrooms

Mycelium spreads to nearby dirt like grass does. You can plant red and brown mushrooms on it in any light level, which is handy for stew farms. Bone meal on a mushroom planted on mycelium grows a huge mushroom. Mining huge mushroom blocks gives you mushrooms back, and Silk Touch keeps the blocks.

Crops need farmland, and you can’t hoe mycelium into it, so carry dirt for your farms.

Why players build here

It’s the safest base location in survival. You can leave doors open, build without walls and go AFK without coming back to creepers. The downsides are distance from everything else, no villages and no wood beyond what you bring. Many players use the island as a quiet home base and run long trips back to the mainland for resources.

Common questions

Do hostile mobs spawn on mushroom islands?

Not naturally, on the surface or in caves underneath, since 1.18. Spawners, raids, phantoms and mobs that wander in from elsewhere are the exceptions.

How rare are mushroom fields?

Very. They cover only about 0.14% of the Overworld and always appear as islands in deep ocean, often far from the mainland.

Is a mushroom island safe for AFK farming?

Safer than anywhere else in the Overworld, since nothing hostile spawns naturally. Phantoms still come if you skip sleep, so sleep in a bed first.
