Savanna Biome in Minecraft: Acacia, Horses and No Rain
Savannas are warm grasslands with flat-topped acacia trees, horses and armadillos, where it never rains. The three variants, villages, savanna vs plains.
Savannas are warm, dry grasslands dotted with flat-topped acacia trees. It never rains there. They’re full of horses, donkeys and armadillos, they have their own village style, and they make a solid starter biome if you like orange wood.
Three versions
- Savanna. Flat to rolling ground, dry yellow-green grass, scattered acacia trees and the occasional oak.
- Savanna plateau. The same biome raised up on high, flat ground. Llamas spawn here.
- Windswept savanna. Wild, jagged terrain with floating overhangs and cliffs. Spectacular, and hard to cross on a horse.
Savanna animals
- Horses and donkeys in herds, same as plains.
- Llamas on savanna plateaus. They can carry chests and form caravans.
- Armadillos, which roll into a ball when you get close. Brush them for scutes to craft wolf armor.
- Cows, sheep, pigs and chickens for food.
- The spotted wolf variant on savanna plateaus.
Acacia trees
Acacia trees grow with a crooked trunk and a flat canopy. The wood is bright orange, with gray bark on the log. Acacia saplings grow fine in other biomes once you’ve collected some, so grab a stack while you’re here if you like the color.
Villages
Savanna villages are made of acacia and terracotta, with orange roofs and fences. They work the same as any other village for trading and iron golems. Pillager outposts generate in savannas too.
Weather and terrain
No rain means you can’t fill a cauldron from the sky and you won’t get rain-related fishing boosts. Thunderstorms still happen. On the plus side, a dry savanna is bright and readable, with long sightlines.
Savannas often sit beside deserts and badlands, which gives you sand, terracotta and gold close by.
Savanna or plains?
Both are flat and full of animals. Plains have oak and a greener look, and they’re the more common biome. Savannas add armadillos and llamas, plus acacia wood, but trees are sparse. If you want a horse-ranch base with a warm palette, the savanna is the better pick.

Common questions
Does it rain in savannas?
No. Savannas are dry, so you'll never see rain. Thunderstorms can still happen and let mobs spawn.
Where do llamas spawn?
In savanna plateaus and windswept hills. They also travel with wandering traders.
What is acacia wood used for?
The same things as any wood: planks, tools, boats and building. Acacia planks are bright orange, which is popular for desert and savanna-style builds.
