Taigas are spruce forests with wolves, foxes and sweet berry bushes. The snowy and old growth variants, spruce villages, igloos, trail ruins, base tips.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

A taiga is a cool, damp forest of spruce trees, ferns and sweet berry bushes. It’s home to wolves, foxes and rabbits, and it has its own spruce-wood village style. The snowy and old growth versions add snow, igloos and giant spruce trees.

Taiga types

Variant Look Notable
Taiga Spruce, ferns, grass Villages, sweet berries, wolves, foxes
Snowy taiga Snow-covered spruce Igloos, snowy wolves, frozen rivers
Old growth pine taiga Tall pine-shaped spruce, podzol Mossy boulders, black wolves
Old growth spruce taiga Giant 2x2 spruce, podzol Chestnut wolves

Old growth taigas grow huge 2x2 spruce trees that give a full inventory of logs in a few trees. They also have podzol, which grows mushrooms in any light, and mossy cobblestone boulders, a free source of moss for building.

Foxes and wolves

Foxes spawn here and in snowy taigas, in groups, and sleep during the day. They pick up and hold items, sometimes emeralds or rabbit’s feet. To get a trusting fox, breed two wild ones with sweet berries; the baby will trust you. Our fox taming guide walks through it.

Wolves are easy to find too. Since 1.20.5 each taiga type has its own wolf look: pale in regular taiga, snowy in snowy taiga, black in old growth pine and chestnut in old growth spruce. Tame any of them with bones.

Rabbits hop around, and you’ll find sheep, pigs, chickens and cows for food.

Sweet berries

Sweet berry bushes grow wild here. Eat them, plant them for a renewable food source, or use them to breed foxes. Walking through a mature bush hurts and slows you, so don’t build paths through them. They also make a cheap mob barrier.

Structures

  • Taiga villages are built of spruce and cobblestone, often with sweet berry bushes and pumpkins nearby.
  • Pillager outposts can generate in taigas.
  • Igloos generate only in snowy taiga and snowy plains. Some have a hidden basement under a trapdoor with a brewing stand, a chest and a zombie villager you can cure.
  • Trail ruins, half-buried, full of suspicious gravel for archaeology.

Is it a good base?

Yes, especially the regular and old growth variants. Wood is easy, food is everywhere, and the dark spruce palette suits cabins and Nordic builds. Snowy taiga is pretty but slow: water freezes and snow piles up. If you prefer oak and birch, the forest biome is the warmer alternative. Compare everything on the biomes hub.
