Forest Biome in Minecraft: Variants, Wolves and a First Base

Forests are the most common place to spawn. Oak and birch wood, the flower, birch and dark forest variants, wolves, and why a forest edge suits a base.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

A forest is a temperate biome thick with oak and birch trees, and it’s the most common place to spawn in Minecraft. It gives you all the wood you need early, plenty of animals, and wolves to tame. Several variants change the trees and the danger level a lot.

Forest variants

Variant Trees Worth knowing
Forest Oak, birch The default. Easy wood, wolves, animals.
Flower forest Oak, birch Huge range of flowers, rabbits and bees. Dye heaven.
Birch forest Birch only Bright, open, easy to navigate.
Old growth birch forest Very tall birch Rare. Gorgeous, but awkward to chop.
Dark forest Dark oak, huge mushrooms Dark enough for mobs to spawn in daytime. Woodland mansions.
Dappled forest Poplar, rare spruce Added in Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50. Autumn colors near cold biomes; red shrubs, shelf mushrooms and fallen poplar logs.

A good first night

Spawn in a forest and you’re set. Punch a tree, make a crafting table, and you’ll have tools before the sun moves. Cows, sheep, pigs and chickens wander in, so you get food and wool for a bed on day one.

The catch is visibility. Trees block sightlines, so creepers sneak up on you more often in forests than on plains. Clear a little space around your shelter.

Wolves

Since 1.20.5 each wolf variant is tied to a biome, and the woods wolf spawns in plain forests. Tame one with bones; our guide to wolves covers taming and wolf armor. A couple of tamed wolves make early nights much less risky.

Flower forests and bees

A flower forest has almost every one-block flower in the game, which means almost every dye. Bee nests appear on some trees too, and bees love the flowers. If you’re planning a bee farm for honey and honeycomb, set it up here.

Dark forests: careful

Dark oak canopies are so thick the ground stays dark at noon. Zombies and skeletons spawn under the leaves in the daytime, and the trees don’t burn them. Light the area with torches before you build, or you’ll be fighting at noon.

Dark forests are also the only home of woodland mansions. They’re rare and full of illagers, but they hold Totems of Undying.

Dark oak wood comes in 2x2 trees, so one tree gives a lot of logs. Plant four saplings in a square to grow your own.

Building here

A forest edge, where the trees meet a plains biome, is the best starter location in the game: wood on one side, flat ground for farms on the other. Further north, forests often border spruce-filled taiga, another wood-rich option. Head back to the biomes hub to compare the rest.

Common questions

What is the rarest forest variant?

Old growth birch forest, with its very tall birch trees, is the rarest. Flower forests are also uncommon and worth marking on a map.

Where do woodland mansions spawn?

Only in dark forests. They're rare and often thousands of blocks from spawn, so most players buy a woodland mansion map (called a woodland explorer map before 2026) from a cartographer.

Do wolves spawn in forests?

Yes. The woods wolf variant spawns in regular forests, so a forest is a good place to find your first dog.
