How to Make Concrete in Minecraft (All 16 Colors)

Four sand, 4 gravel and 1 dye make 8 concrete powder; water hardens it. How to make concrete in Minecraft, where each dye comes from, and bulk tricks.

Shapeless Minecraft recipe for concrete: sand, gravel, sand, gravel, dye, gravel, sand, gravel, sand in any arrangement on the crafting grid, making 8 concrete powder.
Crafting table layout. Empty squares stay empty.

Concrete is a two-step block. First craft concrete powder from 4 sand, 4 gravel and 1 dye, which gives 8 powder (the recipe is shapeless, so the layout above is only one option). Then let the powder touch water and it instantly hardens into solid concrete of the same color.

The powder is the item you carry around. It falls like sand, so you can’t hang it in the air, and it stays powder until water reaches it.

Hardening the powder

Any water block works, source or flowing. The usual ways:

  • Place and pour. Lay a row of powder, pour a water bucket at one end, and let the flow run along it. Pick the water back up when you’re done.
  • Drop it in. Stand on a pillar over a 1-block pool and place powder so it falls into the water. Mine the concrete out from the water block and repeat.
  • Hold it in the water. Stand in shallow water and place powder next to you; the side touching water hardens straight away.

Rain won’t do it, and neither will a water cauldron or a splash bottle. Mine finished concrete with any pickaxe, or it drops nothing.

For thousands of blocks, builders use concrete converters: a piston pushes falling powder into a water column and a second player or machine mines it. For a normal house, the pool method is fine.

Concrete stairs and slabs

Until 2026 concrete only came as full blocks. Since Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50 every color has stairs and slabs, crafted from concrete like any other stairs and slabs or cut one at a time on a stonecutter, which wastes nothing.

Dye for every color

All 16 colors use the same recipe; only the dye changes.

Color Easiest dye source
White Bone meal or lily of the valley
Light gray Azure bluet, oxeye daisy or white tulip
Gray Black dye + white dye
Black Ink sac or wither rose
Brown Cocoa beans
Red Poppy, red tulip, rose bush or beetroot
Orange Orange tulip or torchflower, or red + yellow
Yellow Dandelion or sunflower
Lime Green dye + white dye, or smelted sea pickle
Green Smelted cactus
Cyan Blue dye + green dye, or pitcher plant
Light blue Blue orchid, or blue + white
Blue Lapis lazuli or cornflower
Purple Blue dye + red dye
Magenta Allium or lilac
Pink Pink tulip, peony or pink petals

The mixed colors have their own pages if you need help with ingredients: green dye, lime dye, orange dye and light blue dye.

White concrete

White is the most-built color, and it’s also one of the cheapest because white dye comes from bone meal. One bone gives 3 bone meal, so a single skeleton bone covers 24 white powder. If you have a skeleton spawner or a bone source from a mob farm, white concrete costs you almost nothing but sand and gravel.

White concrete is bright and flat, with no texture noise, which is why it shows up in modern houses, pixel art backgrounds and server lobbies. Pair it with gray or light gray concrete for trim.

Concrete or terracotta?

Both come in 16 colors. Concrete is bright and saturated. Terracotta is muted and earthy, and glazed terracotta adds patterns. Concrete is also weak against explosions (blast resistance 1.8, less than a third of stone), so don’t build creeper-exposed walls from it. For ways to combine the two, see building ideas for beginners.

Getting sand and gravel in bulk

Deserts and beaches have the most sand; gravel shows up on riverbeds, in mountain slopes and in large underground patches. A shovel with Efficiency makes both near-instant. Gravel usually runs out first, since there’s no vanilla recipe that turns cobblestone into it, so plan one dedicated gravel trip before a big build. More material-gathering advice is in the guides hub.

Common questions

Does rain turn concrete powder into concrete?

No. Only touching water as a block, either a source or flowing water, hardens it. Rain and splash bottles do nothing.

Can you use red sand for concrete powder?

Yes. Sand and red sand both work, and you can mix them in one recipe. The color comes only from the dye.

Why does my concrete break without dropping anything?

Concrete needs a pickaxe to drop. Any pickaxe tier works, even wood.

How do I make white concrete?

Craft 4 sand, 4 gravel and 1 white dye into 8 white concrete powder, then touch the powder with water. White dye comes from bone meal or lily of the valley.
