How to Make a Bucket in Minecraft and Infinite Water
Three iron ingots in a V make a bucket. How to make a bucket in Minecraft, what it carries, water bucket tricks that save your life, infinite water.

A bucket is 3 iron ingots in a V shape: the left and right slots of the middle row, and the center of the bottom row. You get one empty bucket. It’s one of the first things worth making when you find iron, because a water bucket gets you out of more bad situations than any weapon.
Getting the iron
Iron ore is common in caves and mountainsides; how to find iron has the best Y levels. You need a stone pickaxe to mine it, then smelt the raw iron in a furnace. Three ore blocks make one bucket.
What a bucket picks up
- Water. Right-click (use) on a water source.
- Lava. Same thing on a lava source. Careful where you point it.
- Milk. Use it on a cow, mooshroom or goat. Drinking milk clears every status effect, good or bad, including poison and the Wither effect.
- Powder snow. Scoop it from snowy slopes. Mobs that walk into it sink and slowly freeze, so it’s mostly used for traps.
- Fish, axolotls and tadpoles. Use a water bucket on them to carry them in the water. An axolotl in a bucket is a portable ally for ocean monuments.
The water bucket tricks
This is why experienced players always carry one:
- Stop fall damage. Place water just before you hit the ground and you land safely. It takes practice, so try it from small heights first.
- Put out fire. Pour it on yourself if you’re burning.
- Deal with lava. Water on a lava source turns it into obsidian; on flowing lava it makes cobblestone. That’s how you get obsidian for a Nether portal. You can even build the portal frame in place this way, without a diamond pickaxe to mine the obsidian.
- Escape endermen. Endermen are hurt by water and won’t follow you into it.
- Climb down cliffs. Pour water at the top and swim down the flow.
Water can’t be placed in the Nether, where it evaporates. Swap your water bucket for a block of something solid when you go there.
Infinite water
Dig a 2×2 hole and put water in two diagonal corners. The other two fill in as sources. Now you can take water from it forever and it refills. Every base should have one of these.
Lava doesn’t work this way, but you can farm it from pointed dripstone over a cauldron; see unlimited lava.
Other uses
- Cake needs 3 milk buckets, which you get back empty. See how to make a cake.
- Lava fuel. A lava bucket in a furnace smelts 100 items, and you keep the bucket.
- Cauldrons can be filled from buckets to store water, lava or powder snow.
Common questions
How many iron ingots do you need for a bucket?
Three, placed in a V shape: the left and right slots of the middle row and the center slot of the bottom row.
How do you make infinite water?
Dig a 2 by 2 hole, or a 3-long trench, and pour water into two opposite corners. Every block that has water sources on two sides becomes a source too, so you can fill your bucket from it forever.
Can you pick up lava with a bucket?
Yes. A lava bucket picks up a lava source block, and it is also one of the best furnace fuels, smelting 100 items.
Can buckets stack?
Empty buckets stack to 16. Full buckets don't stack, so each water, lava or milk bucket takes a whole slot.
