How to Make Light Blue Dye in Minecraft: 2 Recipes
A blue orchid makes 1 light blue dye; blue plus white dye makes 2. How to make light blue dye in Minecraft, where blue orchids grow, the cheap method.
There are two ways to get light blue dye. Put a blue orchid in any crafting grid for 1 light blue dye, or mix 1 blue dye with 1 white dye for 2. Both recipes are shapeless and work in your inventory grid.
Which one is better depends on where you live in your world. Near a swamp, the orchid is the quickest. Everywhere else, mixing is easier.
Method 1: blue orchid
Blue orchids are small, bright blue flowers that grow only in swamps. Pick a few, then use bone meal on grass in the swamp: the flowers that sprout follow the biome, so you’ll get more orchids. Plant some by your base for a renewable source. Each orchid is one dye, no other ingredients.
Method 2: blue + white
This is the method most players end up using, because both ingredients come from things you’ll be farming anyway.
- Blue dye: craft 1 lapis lazuli or 1 cornflower. Lapis is common between roughly Y -32 and Y 32, and a single ore gives several. Cornflowers grow in plains, flower forests and meadows.
- White dye: craft 1 bone meal or 1 lily of the valley. Bone meal comes from bones, which skeletons drop. Our white dye guide has the details.
Combine one of each to get 2 light blue dye. In Bedrock, lapis lazuli and bone meal can go straight into the recipe without converting them first. In Java you need the dye items.
Which is cheaper?
Mixing gives 2 dye per craft, and lapis ore drops 4 to 9 lapis per block before Fortune. One vein of lapis plus a few skeleton bones covers a big build. The orchid route is free but slow to scale unless you plant a flower patch.
Wandering traders sometimes sell 3 light blue dye for an emerald, which is worth taking if you see it.
What to color with it
Light blue is the go-to color for sky, water and ice details. Use it on wool, carpet, glass, terracotta, beds, candles, banners, shulker boxes and leather armor. One dye in concrete powder makes 8 light blue concrete, which looks great for pools.

Common questions
Where do blue orchids grow?
Only in swamp biomes. They spawn naturally there, and using bone meal on swamp grass can grow more.
How much light blue dye does the mixing recipe give?
One blue dye plus one white dye gives 2 light blue dye. A blue orchid gives 1.
Can I use bone meal instead of white dye?
In Bedrock, yes: blue dye or lapis lazuli plus bone meal also makes 2 light blue dye. In Java you need actual white dye, which is one crafting step away from bone meal.
