How to Make a Stonecutter in Minecraft and Save Stone
One iron ingot and 3 stone make a stonecutter. How to make a stonecutter in Minecraft and cut stone into stairs, slabs and bricks with less waste.

A stonecutter is 1 iron ingot and 3 stone. On a crafting table, put the iron ingot in the center slot and the 3 stone across the row beneath it. You get one stonecutter.
The stone has to be plain stone, the smooth gray block you get by smelting cobblestone once in a furnace. Cobblestone won’t work, and neither will smooth stone (which is stone smelted a second time). Mining stone with Silk Touch also gives you plain stone.
How to use it
Open the stonecutter, put a block in the input slot, and it lists everything you can cut from that block. Click one, take the result, and keep clicking to cut more. Shift-click the output to cut the whole stack at once.
Each block becomes one result, or two for slabs. That’s the point of the stonecutter: you pick one output at a time and never lose blocks to a recipe’s ratio.
Why it saves material
| Output | Crafting table | Stonecutter |
|---|---|---|
| Stairs | 6 blocks → 4 stairs | 1 block → 1 stair |
| Slabs | 3 blocks → 6 slabs | 1 block → 2 slabs |
| Walls | 6 blocks → 6 walls | 1 block → 1 wall |
| Stone bricks | 4 stone → 4 bricks | 1 stone → 1 brick |
Stairs are where you save: a staircase of 100 steps costs 150 blocks on a crafting table but only 100 in the stonecutter. Slabs and walls come out the same either way, but the stonecutter is faster because you don’t arrange anything.
It also skips steps. Stone goes straight to stone brick stairs, chiseled stone bricks or stone brick walls without crafting stone bricks first. The same goes for deepslate, blackstone, sandstone, prismarine, quartz, end stone, mud bricks, tuff and copper blocks.
The 2026 drops added a few more. Since Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10, stone cuts into cobblestone and its stairs, slabs and walls, and deepslate cuts straight into cobbled, polished, brick and tile deepslate. Since Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50, concrete cuts into the new concrete stairs and slabs.
What it can’t do
- It doesn’t cut wood, glass or wool.
- It can’t turn cut blocks back into full ones.
- It doesn’t make cobblestone into stone (only the other way round); you still need a furnace for that.
Mason villagers
The stonecutter is the mason’s workstation. Place one near an unemployed villager to get a mason, who buys clay, stone and quartz and sells terracotta, glazed terracotta and polished stone. It’s one of the easier ways to turn spare stone into emeralds. Our villager jobs list covers the rest.

Common questions
Why won't my stonecutter recipe work?
It needs plain stone, not cobblestone or smooth stone. Smelt cobblestone once to get stone.
Can a stonecutter cut wood?
No. In vanilla it only works with stone-type blocks and copper. Wood still has to go through a crafting table.
Does a stonecutter hurt you?
No. Despite the spinning blade, standing on it does no damage.
