How to Make Orange Dye in Minecraft: 4 Ways
Craft an orange tulip, torchflower or open eyeblossom into orange dye, or mix red and yellow for 2. How to make orange dye and where each flower grows.
Orange dye has more sources than most colors. Craft any of these flowers alone for 1 orange dye: an orange tulip, a torchflower, or an open eyeblossom. Or mix 1 red dye with 1 yellow dye in any crafting grid for 2 orange dye. All of these work in the 2x2 inventory grid.
The flower routes
Orange tulip. The classic source. Tulips grow in plains and flower forests, and a tulip patch can hold several colors at once. Use bone meal on grass in a flower forest to spawn more flowers, tulips included.
Torchflower. A tall orange flower grown from torchflower seeds, which only sniffers dig up. If you’ve hatched a sniffer, a small torchflower bed gives you a steady supply of both dye and decoration.
Open eyeblossom. Eyeblossoms grow in the pale garden (added in 1.21.4). They open at night, and an open one crafts into orange dye. A closed one gives gray dye instead, so pick them after dark.
The mixing route
When no orange flowers are nearby, mix:
- Red dye from a poppy, red tulip, rose bush (gives 2) or beetroot.
- Yellow dye from a dandelion or sunflower (gives 2).
Poppies and dandelions grow almost everywhere grass does, so this works in nearly any world from day one. One red plus one yellow gives 2 orange.
If you farm beetroot, you already have a renewable red source. Pair it with a dandelion patch and bone meal and you never need to hunt for tulips.
Using orange dye
Orange is a warm accent color that works with wood, brick and terracotta builds. Common uses:
- Wool and carpet for autumn or desert-themed interiors
- Orange concrete for roofs and modern accents
- Stained glass for sunset-colored windows
- Banners, beds, candles, shulker boxes and leather armor
- Firework stars
Badlands terracotta already includes natural orange, so if you only need orange blocks, mining it there can save dye entirely. For other colors, see green dye or the full list in the guides hub.
Common questions
How many orange dyes does red plus yellow make?
Two. One red dye and one yellow dye in any crafting grid give 2 orange dye.
Where do orange tulips grow?
Mainly in plains and flower forests. Using bone meal on grass in a flower forest is a quick way to grow more.
Do torchflowers give orange dye?
Yes, one torchflower crafts into one orange dye. Torchflower seeds come from sniffers digging in grass and dirt.
