Minecraft Gift Ideas: What to Buy a Minecraft Player

Check which device they play on before buying anything digital. Minecraft gift ideas: the game, Minecoins, Realms, books, LEGO, plush, and what to avoid.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Find out which device they play on before you buy anything digital. A gift for a phone player is different from a gift for someone on a PC, and the wrong one can be useless: Minecoins mean nothing to a Java player, and a PC game code doesn’t help someone who plays on a Switch. If you can’t ask without spoiling the surprise, a physical gift is the safe choice.

If they don’t have the game yet

Buy Minecraft for the device they already use. On a Windows PC that’s Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, sold as a code they redeem on their own Microsoft account. On a phone, tablet or console, store credit for that platform lets them buy it themselves. Prices for each platform are on how much Minecraft costs.

Not sure whether a teenager wants Java or Bedrock? Java vs Bedrock explains the difference in a few minutes. On PC they get both anyway.

If they already play

  • Minecoins or store credit (Bedrock players only): they spend it on skins, worlds and texture packs in the Marketplace. Store credit is the more flexible of the two. Minecraft gift cards explains the difference and the region locks.
  • A Realm: a private server that’s always online for them and their friends. It’s a subscription, so check the price on minecraft.net and decide how many months you’re paying for. Minecraft Realms covers how it works on Java and Bedrock.
  • Another Minecraft game: Minecraft Dungeons is a separate, simpler action game that younger players often enjoy.

Physical gifts

LEGO Minecraft sets come in all sizes, from small single builds to big display sets, and they’re the most popular non-digital gift. Official plush toys, the Mojang-published handbooks and story books, and clothing are the other common picks. Our page on Minecraft merch and party culture goes into more detail.

Buy from known shops. Knock-off listings on marketplaces copy the official box art; real LEGO sets carry the LEGO logo, and licensed products name Mojang or Minecraft as the licensor.

Gifts to avoid

“Minecraft account for sale” listings are the classic trap. The account belongs to someone else, they can recover it with one support request, and the child loses everything they built. The same goes for codes sold far below the normal price, which are often bought with stolen cards and later cancelled. Parents can find more on safety settings in Minecraft for parents.

Common questions

What's the best Minecraft gift for a 10-year-old?

If they don't own the game, the game itself on the device they already use. If they do, a LEGO Minecraft set, an official book or plush, or store credit so they can choose Marketplace content themselves.

Can I buy someone a Minecraft account?

Don't. Accounts sold online are stolen or shared and can be taken back by the original owner. Gift the game or a code that the player redeems on their own account.

Are Minecoins a good gift?

Only for Bedrock players, meaning phones, tablets, consoles and the Windows Bedrock version. They do nothing for someone who plays Java Edition.
