Minecraft Gift Cards: The Three Kinds and What They Buy
A Minecraft gift card can be a game code, a Minecoins card or store credit. What each buys, the region locks that catch people out, and a Bangladesh snag.
A “Minecraft gift card” can be three different things: a game code that unlocks Minecraft itself, a Minecoins card that only buys Bedrock Marketplace content, or a store gift card (Google Play, Apple, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo) that adds money to an account. Check which one you’re holding, or buying, before anything else.
The three kinds
Game codes. These unlock the game on a Microsoft account. The PC code gives Java and Bedrock together. They redeem at minecraft.net/redeem and can’t be moved once redeemed.
Minecoins. Minecraft’s Marketplace currency, used for skin packs, worlds, texture packs and mash-ups in Bedrock Edition. Minecoins don’t buy the game, don’t work in Java Edition, and don’t work in Minecraft Education. Giving Minecoins to a Java player is like giving a PlayStation voucher to someone with an Xbox.
Store gift cards. These add balance in one store. Use it to buy Minecraft on that device, or Minecoins, or anything else in that store. This is the most flexible gift because the player picks what they need, but it only works on the matching platform.
Region locks catch people out
Store gift cards are tied to a country. Google’s help center says Play gift cards “may only be redeemed and used in the country and currency in which they were purchased”, and Apple, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo work the same way. A US card won’t load onto an account registered in another country. Microsoft and Minecraft game codes can also be region-specific; the seller should state the region.
A note for Bangladesh
Bangladesh isn’t on Google’s list of countries where Play gift cards are sold, so the cards offered by local sellers for bKash are cards from other countries, often the US. They won’t redeem on a Bangladeshi Play account. The route usually suggested next, changing your account country, conflicts with Google’s terms, and you’d lose access to any balance left in your real country.
What to do instead depends on your device. Buying Minecraft with bKash goes through the options that hold up.
Redeeming
Each card type goes in a different place. How to redeem a Minecraft code has the full table and fixes for “already redeemed” and region errors.
If you’re shopping for someone, the Minecraft gift guide helps you pick the right card for their device, and how much Minecraft costs tells you how much credit covers the game.
Common questions
Can I gift the game itself?
Yes, in many regions. Minecraft game codes for PC are sold digitally and by retailers, and the person redeems them at minecraft.net/redeem on their own account. On phones and consoles, gifting store credit is usually simpler.
Do Minecoins work on Java Edition?
No. Minecoins are only spent in the Bedrock Marketplace. A Java player can't use them.
Can a gift card from another country be used?
Usually not. Store gift cards are tied to the country of the account. Google, for example, says Play gift cards only work in the country and currency where they were bought.
