Minecraft Birthday Party Ideas, LEGO Sets and Real Merch
Buy Minecraft merch from LEGO or big shops and check for official licensing. LEGO sets, plush and clothes, spotting knockoffs, and birthday party ideas.
Minecraft has more official merchandise than almost any game: LEGO sets, plush toys, clothing, books, figures and party supplies. The safest way to buy is from LEGO itself or large, reputable shops, and to check the packaging for official Minecraft licensing. For a birthday, Minecraft is about the easiest theme there is to do yourself, because everything is square.
LEGO Minecraft
LEGO has made Minecraft sets since 2012. The range goes from small sets with one or two figures and a mob to large builds like villages and mountain caves. New sets come out regularly, often based on recent game content.
A few tips:
- Pick a set around something the child loves in the game: a mob, a biome, the Nether.
- Bigger is not always better for younger kids. Small sets get built and played with; huge ones sometimes get built once.
- Knockoff “block” sets copy the box art closely. Real sets have the LEGO logo on the box and on every brick.
Plush, clothes and other merch
Plush mobs are the evergreen gift. Creepers, axolotls, bees, foxes and the warden are all common. Clothing ranges from creeper hoodies to pixel-art T-shirts.
Official products carry the Minecraft logo and licensing information from Mojang on the tag or packaging. Unlicensed items are everywhere, especially online. They’re not dangerous in themselves, but quality varies and some plush or costumes aimed at young children may not meet toy-safety standards. For small children, buy from shops you trust.
If the gift is for the game itself, like Minecoins, Realms or the game for a new device, see our Minecraft gift guide and Minecraft gift cards.
A Minecraft birthday party
You don’t need to buy a themed party kit. Minecraft’s square, pixelated look is easy to make at home.
Cake. The classic is a grass block: a square cake with brown icing on the sides and a green top, with the top marked into a grid. A creeper face (green squares, black eyes and mouth) is just as easy. Cupcakes arranged in a square with green and brown icing make a “pixel” cake that’s simpler to serve.
Food. Cut everything into cubes: sandwiches, cheese, watermelon. Label snacks after game items: “golden apples” (yellow apples), “redstone” (red sweets), “diamonds” (blue jelly cubes).
Decorations. Cardboard boxes painted or covered in printed block textures become grass blocks, TNT and crafting tables. Green paper with black squares makes a creeper on any door.
Games. A “mining” treasure hunt with hidden “ores” (wrapped sweets or small toys), a creeper piñata, or “pin the face on the creeper.”
Favors. Small plush, Minecraft stickers, or a small LEGO set for each child.
Some parents also set up the game itself for a supervised LAN session with siblings and friends in the same room. Our Minecraft for parents page covers the safety settings if you do.
Books
If the child is a reader, or you’re trying to make them one, Diary of a Minecraft Zombie is a popular (unofficial) chapter-book series, and Mojang also publishes official handbooks and novels. More on Minecraft outside the game is in the media hub.
Common questions
Is LEGO Minecraft discontinued?
No. LEGO has made Minecraft sets since 2012 and still releases new ones, often based on recent additions to the game.
How do I make a Minecraft cake?
The classic is a square grass-block cake: a square sponge covered in brown icing on the sides with a green top, cut into a grid. You can also make a creeper face from green squares and black icing.
What is a good Minecraft gift if the child already has the game?
A gift card for Minecoins or Realms, a LEGO set of their favorite biome or mob, or plush of a mob they love, like an axolotl or a creeper. Our gift guide has more ideas.
