How to Recover Your Minecraft Account After Mojang Migration
Mojang account migration closed on September 19, 2023. Find which Microsoft account owns your game, get into a locked account, and change your name.
Migration from Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts is finished. It closed on September 19, 2023, and there’s no way to migrate an old account now. If you play today, your Minecraft lives on a Microsoft account. Most “lost account” problems turn out to be the game sitting on a different Microsoft account from the one you’re signing in with, and that’s fixable.
What happened to Mojang accounts
- June 2021: Mojang began moving Java players to Microsoft accounts, in waves.
- March 2022: unmigrated accounts started losing access to Java Edition, a small share at a time.
- September 19, 2023: migration ended. Unmigrated accounts could no longer sign in.
- September 19 to December 18, 2023: owners of unmigrated accounts could claim a free new Java account, without their old name, capes or server progress.
- March 10, 2024: Mojang deleted some unmigrated accounts.
If you missed all of that, the old account can’t be brought back. Contacting Minecraft support with your original receipt is still worth a try, but don’t expect them to restore it. Anyone online offering to “migrate” an old account for a fee is running a scam.
“Minecraft says I don’t own the game”
Work through these in order:
- Check which account you’re signed into. In the launcher, click your profile name. On a console, check the Microsoft account shown in the game’s settings. Many people have two or three Microsoft accounts without realizing it.
- Find the purchase. Sign in to account.microsoft.com and open Payment & billing > Order history. Try every email you might have used. Search old inboxes for receipts from Mojang or Microsoft.
- Mobile and console purchases are tied to the store account too. A Google Play purchase is on your Google account, an App Store purchase on your Apple Account, and so on. The Microsoft account sign-in inside the game is separate, so a new phone with the same Google account can reinstall it.
If you redeemed a code on the wrong account, it stays there. See how to redeem a Minecraft code before redeeming anything else.
Locked out of your Microsoft account
Use Microsoft’s account recovery form at account.live.com/acsr. It asks for details only the owner would know: old passwords, the subjects of recent emails, gamertags, and purchase details. The more you provide, the better your chances. Fill it in from a device and network you’ve used before.
If someone hijacked the account, change the password as soon as you’re back in, turn on two-step verification, and remove devices you don’t recognize from the security page. Minecraft-specific help is listed on official Minecraft support.
Changing your name
Java Edition: sign in at minecraft.net, open your profile and change your profile name (full name-change steps and rules). It’s free, and you can do it once every 30 days. The new name shows on servers the next time you sign in through the Minecraft Launcher.
Bedrock Edition: your name is your Xbox gamertag. Change it from your Xbox profile settings or on xbox.com. The first change is free; Microsoft charges for later ones.
Capes you already have, including the Migrator cape, stay with your account. Minecraft capes explains which ones you can still get.

Common questions
I never migrated my Mojang account. Can I still?
No. Migration ended on September 19, 2023. A follow-up period that offered unmigrated owners a free new account ran until December 18, 2023, and Mojang started deleting unmigrated accounts in March 2024.
How often can I change my Java username?
Once every 30 days, free, from your Minecraft profile on minecraft.net. Names must be 3 to 16 characters using only letters, numbers and the _ character.
How do I change my name on Bedrock?
Bedrock shows your Xbox gamertag, so you change it in your Xbox profile settings. Microsoft lets you change it once for free; later changes cost money.
