Minecraft Launcher 2026: Installations, RAM and Fixes
The official Minecraft Launcher installs, updates and starts Java and Bedrock on PC. Installations, old versions, RAM and JVM settings, folders, and fixes.
The Minecraft Launcher is the official app you use to install, update and start Minecraft on Windows, Mac and Linux. On Windows it handles both Java Edition and Bedrock (listed as Minecraft for Windows). Download it free from minecraft.net and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game.
The layout
The left sidebar lists the games your account can open. Pick Minecraft: Java Edition and you get four tabs:
- Play: the big green button and a dropdown to choose which installation to start.
- Installations: your saved setups, each tied to a game version.
- Skins: a skin library. Upload a PNG, switch between saved skins and choose the classic or slim arm model. How to change your Minecraft skin covers Bedrock as well.
- Patch notes: changelogs for every release and snapshot.
Installations: the useful part
An installation is a named profile that says which version to run, which folder to use and how much memory to give it. Click New installation, pick a version and save. Three ways people use this:
- Old versions. Every Java release back to the early alphas is available. Tick “Historical versions” in the launcher settings to see the oldest ones. How to play old versions explains the pitfalls.
- Snapshots. Turn on “Snapshots” in settings to test features before release. Use a separate folder, because snapshot worlds can break.
- Modded profiles. Fabric and NeoForge installers add their own installation here. Give each modpack its own game directory so mods and worlds never mix, or use one of the best third-party launchers, which do that for you. The setup is in how to install Minecraft mods.
Memory and JVM arguments
Edit an installation and open More options. The JVM arguments line includes an -Xmx value, which is the maximum RAM Minecraft may use. Vanilla doesn’t need more than the default, which went from 2 GB to 4 GB with Java 26.1. For big modpacks, raising it to 4-6 GB helps, but don’t give Minecraft more than about half your system RAM. Too much can cause longer garbage-collection pauses, not fewer.
Where your files are
Each installation has a game directory, .minecraft unless you changed it. On Windows that’s %appdata%\.minecraft, on Mac ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft. Inside you’ll find saves (worlds), screenshots, resourcepacks and mods. Copying saves is all you need for a backup.
When it misbehaves
- “Unable to update the Minecraft Native Launcher”: download a fresh installer from minecraft.net and reinstall over the top.
- Endless loading or sign-in loop: sign out, restart the launcher and sign back in.
- The game crashes but the launcher is fine: update your graphics driver and test a clean vanilla installation with no mods.

Common questions
Is the Minecraft Launcher free?
Yes. The launcher is a free download from minecraft.net. It only lets you play the full game on a Microsoft account that owns it; otherwise it offers the demo.
Where are my worlds and screenshots?
In the game directory, which is .minecraft by default. In the launcher, open Installations, hover over an installation and click the folder icon to open it.
Can I use a third-party launcher instead?
Well-known launchers like Prism Launcher sign in with your Microsoft account and are fine for modded play. Avoid any launcher that offers to skip the login, because that means pirated game files.
