What Is Hypixel? Minecraft's Biggest Server and How to Join

Hypixel is the largest Minecraft server network: a Java Edition server, open since 2013, built around its own minigames like Bed Wars, SkyWars and the SkyBlock RPG. It’s free to play with a legitimate Java account. To join, add mc.hypixel.net in the Multiplayer menu.

How big is it?

Hypixel holds a Guinness World Record for the most popular independent server for a video game, set with 64,533 players online at once in July 2017. Its all-time peak is reported at around 216,000 concurrent players. Those are historical figures; live player counts change daily, and the server list shows the current number when you add it.

It was founded by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette and is run by Hypixel Inc.

What you actually play

Hypixel is a hub. You log into a lobby and pick a game:

• Bed Wars: teams defend a bed on their island while trying to break everyone else’s. Once your bed is gone, death is permanent.
• SkyBlock: a long-term RPG that starts on a tiny island and grows into an economy with skills, dungeons, collections and an auction house. It’s closer to an MMO than to vanilla Minecraft.
• SkyWars: a fast free-for-all on floating islands. Loot your chests, bridge out, knock people into the void.
• Duels, Murder Mystery, Build Battle, The Pit and a long list of smaller modes.

Because the games are Hypixel’s own designs, you don’t need to know much vanilla Minecraft to enjoy them. You do need decent ping for PvP modes; the server hosts in North America, so players far from there feel it.

Ranks and money

Everything is playable for free. Ranks (VIP, MVP and so on) are paid and give cosmetics, chat colors and quality-of-life perks, not combat advantages. Never buy ranks or SkyBlock coins from third-party sellers; it breaks Hypixel’s rules and gets accounts banned.

Joining

1. Launch Java Edition on the latest release (Hypixel accepts a range of versions).
2. Multiplayer → Add Server, address mc.hypixel.net.
3. Join and pick a game from the lobby compass.

Bedrock, mobile and console players
