EarthMC and Earth SMPs: Minecraft on a Real World Map
Earth servers run survival on a scaled map of the real world. How EarthMC towns and nations work, how to join EarthMC, and how to judge any Earth SMP.
An Earth server is a survival multiplayer server played on a scaled-down map of the real world. Continents, mountain ranges and rivers sit roughly where they do on a globe, and players found towns and nations in the places they choose. EarthMC, founded in 2016, is the best-known one and calls itself the original. “Earth SMP” is the general name for the genre.
How the map works
The world isn’t generated from a seed the way a normal survival world is. It’s a prebuilt terrain map, shrunk to fit inside Minecraft. EarthMC’s map is 1:313 scale according to its own site, so a few hundred blocks of walking covers a real-world distance that would take hours. Smaller Earth SMPs use other scales, and the smaller the scale, the more cramped countries feel.
Don’t confuse this with Build the Earth, which recreates the planet at full 1:1 size as a creative building project. Earth servers are about survival and politics, not accurate architecture.
Towns, nations and politics
Most Earth servers, EarthMC included, run the Towny plugin. In practice that means:
- You found a town by claiming chunks, which protects them from other players.
- You invite residents and set what they’re allowed to build or open.
- Towns can join or form nations, which then make alliances, trade deals and sometimes wars.
- Claims usually cost in-game money, so you mine, farm and trade to keep your land.
The fun is the politics as much as the building. Some players never dig a mine; they negotiate borders and run nations in Discord.
Joining EarthMC
EarthMC is a Java Edition server. Its site lists the address as join.earthmc.net. Add it through Multiplayer → Add Server, the same way as any other server (see how to join a Minecraft server). Always copy addresses from the official site or Discord. Copycat “Earth” servers with near-identical names exist, and some exist to sell ranks for a server that will vanish in a month.
Expect a slow start. Most good land near popular regions is claimed, so new players usually join an existing town first. That’s also the fastest way to learn the plugin and the local politics.
Judging any Earth SMP
Before you pour weeks into one, check:
- Activity at your hours. A server that’s full in US evenings may be empty when you play from South Asia. Join at your normal time and look around.
- Map age. An old map means established nations and little free land; a fresh one means room to build but fewer allies.
- Ping. Bigger Earth servers mostly host in North America or Europe; hover over the bars in your server list to see your latency.
- Rules on raiding and war. Some allow sieges, some forbid griefing outside declared wars. Read them before you build near a border.
- A live Discord. The politics happen there.
If you like the community side but not the map gimmick, a regular SMP offers the same shared-survival feel on normal terrain. If you want politics without rules, 2b2t is the extreme version.
