What Is an SMP in Minecraft? Survival Multiplayer Explained
SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer: a server where players share one survival world. The main types of SMP, what makes a good one, and how to join one.
SMP stands for Survival Multiplayer: a server where a group of players share one survival world, gathering resources, building bases, trading and sometimes fighting over the same map. The term got famous through YouTube creator servers, where a group of friends played survival together for months and filmed it, but any shared survival server counts.
The main types
Vanilla SMP. Pure survival with no plugins beyond the basics. Usually small and whitelisted, so you apply or get invited. These feel the most like single-player Minecraft with neighbors.
Semi-vanilla SMP. Survival plus quality-of-life plugins: land claims that stop griefing, /home commands, a shop or economy. Most public SMPs are this type, often running Paper.
Modded SMP. Everyone installs the same modpack (Create, tech or magic packs) and builds together. You need the exact modpack version the server uses.
Themed SMP. Survival with a twist, like the Earth servers that put you on a scaled map of the real world, or hardcore SMPs where dying means a ban.
Anarchy. Survival with no rules at all. Griefing and hacking are allowed. 2b2t is the oldest and most famous.
What makes a good SMP
A server’s player count tells you less than you’d think. A friendly world with 30 regulars is better than a 3,000-player server where nobody talks to you. Before you settle in, check:
- Clear rules about griefing, stealing and PvP, posted somewhere you can read them. Admins can also turn off PvP entirely or by area.
- Moderation that responds. Ask a question in chat or Discord and see what happens.
- A map that’s not about to reset. Ask when the last reset was and whether one is planned.
- People online when you play. Many SMPs are busiest in North American or European evenings. If you play from South Asia, join at your usual time first.
- Reasonable ping. Hover over the bars in the Java server list to see milliseconds.
- No pay-to-win. Cosmetic ranks are normal. Selling diamonds or kits for money is a bad sign.
Joining one
Most SMPs post their address on their website or Discord, and many whitelisted ones ask you to fill in a short application first. Adding the address works like any other server; see how to join a Minecraft server.
Starting your own
For a friend group, starting an SMP is often better than finding one. A Realm works for up to 10 players online with no setup, and running your own server gives you plugins and no player cap. Write three or four rules on day one, turn on the whitelist, and take backups.
Common questions
What does SMP stand for in Minecraft?
Survival Multiplayer. It means a server where several players share one survival world, as opposed to minigames or creative building.
How do I start my own SMP?
Run a server (your own PC, a host, or a Realm for a small group), set it to survival, turn on the whitelist and invite people. A few clear rules about griefing and stealing save a lot of arguments later.
Are SMPs free to join?
Most public SMPs are free. Some sell cosmetic ranks, and whitelisted SMPs may ask you to apply on their Discord first.
