Minecraft Java Edition is the original version of the game, playable on Windows, Mac and Linux. It’s where modding, technical redstone and the big community servers live, and it’s sold together with Bedrock as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC ($29.99 in the US store when we checked in November 2026).

Java started life in 2009 as a browser game, reached its official 1.0 release in November 2011, and has been updated ever since. It is still written in Java, which is where the name comes from. Bedrock was created later as a separate codebase for phones and consoles.

What only Java does well

Free, deep modding. Mod loaders like Fabric and NeoForge let you change almost anything, from performance and minimaps to whole new dimensions. Most mods are free on Modrinth and CurseForge. Start with how to install Minecraft mods.

Servers you control. Mojang publishes the server software for free, and community versions like Paper add plugins and better performance. Hosting for friends is covered in how to make a Minecraft server.

Any version, any time. The launcher can install almost every release since 2009, plus weekly snapshots of upcoming features.

Predictable technical mechanics. Java redstone has well-documented timings and quirks like quasi-connectivity that many designs rely on. Farm and contraption tutorials are written for Java far more often than for Bedrock. Redstone basics is the place to start.

Debug tools. The F3 screen shows coordinates, facing, biome, light level and chunk borders, which makes building and finding things much easier.

How it plays differently

Java has an attack cooldown, introduced in 1.9, so timed hits do more damage than spam-clicking, and swords do a sweeping attack. Some mob behavior and drop rates differ from Bedrock, and some farm designs only work on one edition. For the whole list of differences side by side, see Java vs Bedrock.

What changed in 2026

Version numbers. After 1.21.11, Mojang moved to year-based numbering. Java Edition 26.1 came out on March 24, 2026, and later releases follow the same pattern.

System requirements. In July 2026 Mojang raised the Java requirements as it prepares a Vulkan renderer: a 4-core CPU, 8 GB of RAM (12 GB with integrated graphics) and a Vulkan 1.3 GPU as the minimum, 16 GB recommended. Older PCs can still play, but they aren’t supported. Details are in Minecraft system requirements.

Who should play Java

Play Java if you want mods or shaders, enjoy technical builds and farms, want to join big Java servers like Hypixel, or play on a Mac or Linux. If your friends are on phones or consoles, Bedrock is the better fit, and Windows owners get both anyway. Java-focused guides across the site are gathered on the Java Edition hub.

Common questions

Is Java Edition free?

No. It's sold together with Bedrock as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. The Minecraft Launcher includes a free demo that lasts five in-game days.

Can Java players play with Bedrock players?

Not directly. A Java server running GeyserMC can let Bedrock players join, but that's set up by the server owner, and some features don't carry over.

Why is the latest Java version called 26.x?

Mojang switched to year-based version numbers in 2026. Java Edition 26.1 was released on March 24, 2026, and followed 1.21.11.
