Minecraft Java Edition Guides: Mods, Servers and Setup

Minecraft Java Edition guides for Windows, Mac and Linux: installing it, mods and shaders, servers, old versions, and mechanics that differ from Bedrock.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Java Edition is the original Minecraft, the version that started as a browser game in 2009 and still runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It’s the edition for mods, shaders, technical redstone and the biggest community servers. You get it with any PC purchase of Minecraft, bundled with Bedrock.

Start with the Java Edition guide for what makes it different, who it suits and what changed in 2026 (new version numbers and higher system requirements). If you’re still deciding which edition to buy, Java vs Bedrock compares them directly.

Getting set up

Java runs through the Minecraft Launcher. The launcher guide covers installations, memory settings and game folders, and there are step-by-step install guides for Windows and Mac. Check the system requirements first if your computer is a few years old, because Mojang raised them in July 2026.

What Java players spend their time on

  • Mods and shaders. The mods hub covers loaders, installing mods safely and the best starter mods, and the shaders guide gets you better lighting.
  • Servers. Java has the largest public servers, including Hypixel, and running your own is free with the official server software. See how to make a Minecraft server.
  • Redstone and farms. Most technical tutorials are written for Java. The redstone hub explains the basics, including Java-only behavior like quasi-connectivity.
  • Old versions and snapshots. The launcher can run almost any release since 2009, and weekly snapshots let you test features early. See how to play old versions and snapshots and previews.
  • Commands and data packs. Java’s command set is the most complete. Our commands reference flags where Java and Bedrock syntax differ.

Across the rest of the site, pages say which edition they cover. When a mechanic works differently on Java (combat timing, sweeping attacks, some mob drops), we note it on the page.
