How to Install Minecraft Mods on Java in 10 Minutes
Install a mod loader, get matching mods from Modrinth or CurseForge, and drop the .jar files in your mods folder. How to install Minecraft mods, and fixes.
To install Minecraft mods on Java Edition, install a mod loader (Fabric or NeoForge) for your game version, download mods for that same loader and version from Modrinth or CurseForge, put the .jar files in your mods folder, and launch the loader’s profile. The whole thing takes about ten minutes the first time.
There’s also a shortcut: a launcher app that does all of that for you. Both routes are below.
Before you start
- Own Java Edition and launch the game at least once in the version you plan to mod, so the files exist. Mods don’t work on Bedrock; see the last section.
- Back up your worlds. Copy the
savesfolder somewhere safe. Adding a mod is reversible; removing one that added blocks is not. - Decide on a loader. If you don’t know which, read Forge vs Fabric. Short version: Fabric for performance and light mods, NeoForge for big content mods.
The easy route: a mod launcher app
The Modrinth App, the CurseForge app and Prism Launcher are free launchers that create a separate modded instance, install the right loader, and download mods and their dependencies with one click. They keep each modpack in its own folder, so your vanilla game stays untouched. If you plan to play modpacks, start here; our launcher comparison helps you pick one.
Sign in with your Microsoft account inside the app, create an instance (pick the game version and loader), then search for mods and click Install. Done.
The manual route: official launcher
1. Install the loader
Fabric: download the installer from fabricmc.net, run it, choose your Minecraft version, and click Install. A “fabric-loader” installation appears in the official launcher. Then download the Fabric API mod; most Fabric mods need it.
NeoForge: download the installer from neoforged.net for your game version, run it, and choose Install client. A NeoForge installation appears in the launcher.
Both installers need the launcher closed while they run. If the installer doesn’t open on double-click, you may need Java installed on your system; the Minecraft launcher guide explains how installations and game directories work.
2. Download mods that match
On Modrinth or CurseForge, open a mod’s page and filter its files by your game version and your loader. All three have to line up: game version, loader, mod. Check the mod’s description for dependencies (Fabric API, Architectury, Cloth Config and similar libraries) and download those too.
3. Find the mods folder
Open the launcher, go to Installations, hover over your Fabric or NeoForge installation and click the folder icon. That opens the game directory. On Windows it’s %appdata%\.minecraft by default. If there’s no mods folder yet, launch the loader profile once and it will be created, or make it yourself.
4. Drop in the jars and launch
Put the .jar files straight into mods (don’t unzip them). Select the loader installation in the launcher and press Play. Fabric players can check the loaded list with the Mod Menu mod; NeoForge has a Mods button on the title screen.
Good first mods
Start small and add one or two mods at a time, so you know which one broke things if something does. Sodium (big FPS boost), a minimap and a “what am I looking at” mod are good first picks; our beginner mod list has more.
If it crashes
Crashing at startup almost always means a version mismatch or a missing dependency. Read the crash screen: it usually names the mod. Common fixes:
- Remove the newest mod you added and try again.
- Make sure no Fabric mods are in a NeoForge folder (or the reverse).
- Install the missing library the error names.
Still stuck? The launch troubleshooting guide explains how to read crash reports and logs.
Bedrock and Education players
Bedrock doesn’t load Java mods. You can import add-ons (.mcaddon or .mcpack files) on Windows and mobile, or buy Marketplace content. Minecraft Education has its own rules, covered in mods and add-ons in Minecraft Education. Back on Java, the full section is at the mods hub.
Common questions
Are Minecraft mods free?
Almost all of them, yes. Modrinth and CurseForge host them for free. A site charging money for a well-known mod is a scam.
Can Bedrock Edition use mods?
Not Java mods. Bedrock uses add-ons (behavior and resource packs) and Marketplace content, which can change mobs, items and textures but work differently from Java mods.
Do my friends need the same mods to play together?
For mods that add blocks, items or mobs, yes: the server and every player need the same mods at the same versions. Client-only mods like Sodium or a minimap don't need to match.
