How to Download Minecraft on Mac (Java Edition)
On a Mac you play Java Edition: buy it on minecraft.net, install the official launcher and sign in. Apple Silicon vs Intel, mods, and no Bedrock.
On a Mac you play Java Edition. Buy Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC on minecraft.net, download the Minecraft Launcher for macOS from the same site, sign in with your Microsoft account and press Play. The launcher installs its own Java runtime, so you don’t need to install Java yourself.
Installing on macOS
- Buy the game at minecraft.net with the Microsoft account you want to own it. The standard edition was $29.99 in the US store when we checked in November 2026.
- Go to minecraft.net/download and get the macOS launcher. Open the .dmg and drag Minecraft into Applications.
- Open it. If macOS warns about an app downloaded from the internet, confirm it’s from Mojang and allow it.
- Sign in with your Microsoft account. The Play button downloads the latest release the first time.
The Minecraft Launcher guide covers the rest: installations, older versions, memory settings and separate folders for modded play.
Why there’s no Bedrock on Mac
Bedrock exists for Windows, phones, tablets, Chromebooks and consoles, not macOS. The PC purchase still includes a Bedrock license, but you can only use it on a Windows PC. If your friends play on phones or Xbox, read Java vs Bedrock before you buy. An iPad version of Bedrock might suit you better.
Apple Silicon vs Intel
Java Edition runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later), and those machines handle vanilla Minecraft well. Older Intel MacBooks with integrated graphics get warm and lose frames at high render distances.
Mojang raised the Java Edition system requirements in July 2026 as it moves the game to a new Vulkan renderer. Older Macs may still run current versions, but they’re no longer the target hardware. Our system requirements page has the new figures.
Mods, shaders and performance
Mods work on Mac the same way they do on Windows: install Fabric or NeoForge through its installer, then drop mods into the mods folder. Start with how to install Minecraft mods. Performance mods like Sodium help a lot on laptops. Shader packs run, but they’re heavy on integrated graphics; read the shaders guide and try a lightweight pack first.
For everything Java-specific, from the debug screen to snapshots, see the Java Edition guide.
Common questions
Can Mac players play with Windows players?
Yes, on Java Edition. Macs, Windows and Linux all run Java and share servers and LAN worlds. Macs can't join Bedrock worlds from consoles or phones unless a server runs a bridge like GeyserMC.
Is there a Bedrock version for Mac?
No. Bedrock isn't released for macOS. The PC purchase still includes Bedrock, which you can use on a Windows PC with the same Microsoft account.
Does Minecraft run natively on M1, M2 and later Macs?
Yes. The official launcher runs Java Edition natively on Apple Silicon, so you don't need Rosetta or a separate Java install.
