How to Get Chainmail Armor in Minecraft: You Can't Craft It

Chainmail can't be crafted. Buy it from an armorer for 1 to 4 emeralds or take it from zombies. How to get chainmail armor and how it compares to iron.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

You can’t craft chainmail armor in Java or Bedrock. The reliable way to get it is to buy it from an armorer villager: apprentice armorers sell chainmail boots and leggings, journeyman armorers sell the helmet and chestplate, each for 1 to 4 emeralds. Zombies, skeletons and woodland mansion chests are the backup sources.

Searches for a “chainmail recipe” usually turn up the chain block (iron nuggets around an iron ingot). That’s a decorative block. It does not make armor.

Buying it from an armorer

This is the method that actually works if you want a full set. An armorer is any unemployed villager next to a blast furnace. Trade with them until they level up, and the chainmail trades unlock:

Piece Armorer level Price (Java, before discounts)
Boots Apprentice 1 emerald
Leggings Apprentice 3 emeralds
Helmet Journeyman 1 emerald
Chestplate Journeyman 4 emeralds

Villagers pick their trades from a pool, so a given armorer may not offer every piece. Bedrock trade tables differ slightly. If yours is missing one, break and replace the blast furnace before you trade with them to reroll, or employ a second armorer. The villager jobs list shows which workstation gives which job.

Taking it from mobs

Zombies, husks, skeletons, strays and bogged can spawn wearing chainmail on Normal and Hard difficulty. If you kill one, there’s an 8.5% chance per piece that it drops, rising by 1 percentage point per level of Looting. Dropped pieces come with random damage. It’s a nice surprise, not a plan.

Finding it in chests

Woodland mansion chests can hold a chainmail chestplate, roughly a 1 in 6 chance per chest. Mansions are far from spawn and dangerous, so most players treat this as a bonus, not a reason to go.

Is it worth wearing?

Chainmail sits between gold and iron. A full set gives 12 armor points; iron gives 15. Durability is about the same as iron. Its one real advantage is enchantability: 12, compared with iron’s 9. That means slightly better odds of good enchantments from an enchanting table. Check our armor enchantment rankings for what to aim for.

In practice, chainmail is a cheap stopgap if you have an armorer and spare emeralds before you have much iron, and a costume piece after that. Its see-through look is popular for knights and guards on servers.

Repairing and recycling

Repair chainmail on an anvil with iron ingots, or merge two damaged pieces in a grindstone. When it’s worn out, smelt it in a furnace or blast furnace for an iron nugget.

Common questions

Can you craft chainmail armor in survival?

No. There is no crafting recipe in Java or Bedrock. The chain block is craftable, but it does not make armor.

Is chainmail better than iron armor?

No. A full chainmail set gives 12 armor points against iron's 15. Chainmail does take enchantments better, with an enchantability of 12 against iron's 9.

How do you repair chainmail armor?

Combine it with iron ingots on an anvil, or merge two damaged pieces in a grindstone or crafting grid.
