Skeleton in Minecraft: Archer Stats, Drops and Spawners
Skeletons shoot arrows for 3-5 damage on Normal, burn at sunrise and run from wolves. Where they spawn, how to fight them, and why to keep a spawner.

Skeletons are the undead archers that spawn in the dark across almost every Overworld biome. They shoot arrows for 3-5 damage on Normal, burn when the sun comes up, and drop bones and arrows. In a cave they’re the mob most likely to knock you off a ledge.
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 20 HP (10 hearts) |
| Arrow damage | Java: 2-4 / 3-5 / 4-8 HP. Bedrock: 3-5 HP |
| Spawns | Light level 0 in the Overworld, soul sand valleys, Nether fortresses, dungeons |
| Drops | 0-2 bones, 0-2 arrows, bow (8.5%), skull from charged creeper |
| XP | 5 (+1-3 per equipment piece) |
Where skeletons spawn
Anywhere in the Overworld at light level 0, except mushroom fields and the deep dark. In snowy biomes most are replaced by strays, and swamps have the poison-arrow bogged variant. In the Nether, skeletons spawn in soul sand valleys and make up a fifth of the spawns in Nether fortresses, alongside their tougher cousin the wither skeleton.
A quarter of dungeon spawners are skeleton spawners, and trial chambers often use skeletons as their ranged mob.
How to fight them
On Java, skeletons strafe sideways while they shoot, back off if you get within four blocks and sprint toward you when you’re far away. On Bedrock they stand still to fire. Either way:
- Use cover. Break line of sight, let it walk round the corner, then hit it.
- Bring a shield. A shield blocks arrows completely, and you can walk straight at a skeleton with it raised.
- Out-range them with a bow. A bow with Power wins most duels, since skeletons have to stop strafing to aim.
- Don’t fight on a cliff edge. Arrow knockback has killed more players in caves than skeleton damage has.
Skeletons run from wolves until a wolf hits them, so a couple of tamed wolves clear them quickly.
Drops
Bones are the main prize. One bone is three bone meal, and bone meal drives crop farms, tree farms and white dye. Arrows refill your quiver. The bow drops 8.5% of the time on Java, sometimes enchanted. A charged creeper blast gives a skeleton skull, the only way to get one.
The music disc trick
When a skeleton’s arrow kills a creeper, the creeper drops a random music disc. Getting a skeleton to aim past you into a creeper is fiddly, so most players only bother when they’re building a disc collection. Ancient cities, dungeons and trial chambers are easier sources for most discs.
Skeleton spawners
A dungeon with a skeleton spawner is worth keeping, since you can’t pick up a spawner and move it. With some water to push mobs into a drop shaft, it becomes an XP and bone farm in an afternoon. Our skeleton farm guide walks through a design that works on both editions.
Skeleton horsemen
During a thunderstorm, lightning can spawn a skeleton horse trap. Walk up to the horse and four skeleton horsemen appear, wearing enchanted iron helmets and carrying enchanted bows. It’s a tough fight early on but drops good gear and four rideable skeleton horses.
Java vs Bedrock
- Java skeletons pick up items they walk over; Bedrock skeletons go looking for dropped items.
- Underwater, Java skeletons keep shooting; Bedrock ones switch to melee.
- Both editions now shoot every 3 seconds on Easy and Normal and every 2 on Hard. Bedrock used to fire faster at close range, until 26.30 switched it to Java’s timing.

Common questions
How do you get music discs from skeletons?
Get a skeleton to kill a creeper. The creeper drops a random music disc. Discs also show up in dungeon chests, ancient cities and trial chambers, so this isn't the only source.
Do skeletons burn in daylight?
Yes, unless they're wearing a helmet, standing in water or shade, or have Fire Resistance. They also look for shelter during the day.
What happens to a skeleton in powder snow?
After about 7 seconds it starts shaking, and around 15 seconds later it turns into a stray at full health.
