Zombie stats in Minecraft: health 20 HP (10 hearts), 2 armor; damage 2.5 / 3 / 4.5 HP (Easy / Normal / Hard); spawns Overworld, light level 0, groups of 4 (Java) or 2-4 (Bedrock); drops 0-2 rotten flesh; rare iron ingot, carrot, potato; xp 5 adult, 12 baby, +1-3 per equipment piece.

The zombie is the first hostile mob most players meet: 20 health, a slow walk, 3 damage per hit on Normal, and a habit of catching fire at sunrise. It’s easy to kill alone, but zombies come in groups, break doors on Hard, and turn villagers into zombie villagers.

Stat Value
Health 20 HP (10 hearts), 2 armor
Damage 2.5 / 3 / 4.5 HP (Easy / Normal / Hard)
Spawns Overworld, light level 0, groups of 4 (Java) or 2-4 (Bedrock)
Drops 0-2 rotten flesh; rare iron ingot, carrot, potato
XP 5 adult, 12 baby, +1-3 per equipment piece

Spawning and variants

Zombies spawn in the dark almost everywhere in the Overworld, except mushroom fields and the deep dark. In deserts most are replaced by husks, which don’t burn. About 5% of zombies spawn as babies and 5% as zombie villagers.

Baby zombies are the real threat. They’re fast, small enough to slip under one-high gaps, never grow up, and give 12 XP. On Java a few of them spawn riding chickens.

Daylight and burning

Zombies burn when the sun is up and they’re under open sky. A helmet, water, Fire Resistance or shade (light level 14 or less) protects them. So the zombie that keeps chasing you at noon is usually wearing a helmet or standing under a tree.

Doors and sieges

On Hard difficulty some zombies can break wooden and copper doors. It takes about 10 seconds and you’ll hear the banging. Use iron doors or fence gates where it matters. On Easy and Normal, doors are safe.

On Java, zombies near a village at midnight can trigger a zombie siege, with up to 20 zombies spawning right in the village. A lit, walled village survives it.

Zombies and villagers

Zombies chase villagers on sight. A villager killed by a zombie becomes a zombie villager 50% of the time on Normal and every time on Hard. On Easy it just dies.

That sounds bad, but zombie villagers are useful: cure one with a splash potion of Weakness and a golden apple and you get a huge permanent trade discount. See how to cure a zombie villager.

Zombies in water

A zombie with its head underwater for 30 seconds starts converting, and about 15 seconds later becomes a drowned. The process can’t be stopped once it starts, and a drowned made this way never carries a trident.

Fighting zombies

A stone sword and a shield are plenty for one or two. For groups, back into a doorway or a one-wide corridor so they come at you one at a time. On Hard in Java, hitting a zombie can summon reinforcements, so finish them quickly. Smite works on all zombie types.

Zombies also seek out turtle eggs within about 24 blocks and trample them, so light up any beach where you’re breeding turtles.

Drops

  • Rotten flesh: 0-2. Feeds wolves, trades to clerics, or eat it in an emergency (it gives Hunger).
  • Iron ingot, carrot, potato: about 0.8% each per player kill. A free carrot or potato can start a farm if you haven’t found a village.
  • Equipment: anything it picked up always drops; gear it spawned with has a small chance.

Our survival tips cover the first nights when zombies are a real threat, and the mobs hub covers the rest.

Common questions

Can zombies break doors in Minecraft?

Only on Hard difficulty, and only some zombies. They can break wooden and copper doors, which takes about 10 seconds. Iron doors and fence gates stop them.

Why don't some zombies burn in the sun?

Zombies wearing a helmet, standing in water, or in shade (light level 14 or lower) don't burn. Husks never burn at all.

How do you get iron from zombies?

Zombies have a rare chance (under 1%) to drop an iron ingot, carrot or potato when a player kills them. It's a nice bonus, not a reliable source.
