How to Make Bread in Minecraft: 3 Wheat in a Row
Three wheat in a horizontal row make 1 bread. How to make bread in Minecraft, grow the wheat, how much hunger it restores, and why villagers breed with it.

Place 3 wheat in a horizontal row on a crafting table, any row, and you get 1 bread. That’s the whole recipe. It doesn’t fit in your inventory grid, because the 2x2 grid is only two slots wide.
Getting wheat
Wheat is the first crop most players grow.
- Get seeds by breaking tall grass. Seeds drop fairly often; a dozen takes a minute or two on a plains biome.
- Till dirt next to water with a hoe. Water hydrates farmland up to 4 blocks away in every direction.
- Plant and wait. Wheat goes through eight growth stages and is ready when it turns golden brown and the top looks tufted. Bone meal speeds it up.
- Harvest by breaking the crop. Ripe wheat drops one wheat and some seeds to replant.
A 9x9 plot with a single water block in the middle gives 80 farmland blocks, which is plenty for one player. Our farming guide covers layouts, lighting and keeping animals off the crops.
Can’t wait? Village farms often have wheat ready to harvest. Replant what you take.
How good is bread?
Bread restores 5 hunger and 6 saturation, which makes it a decent all-round food. It’s not as filling as steak or cooked porkchop (8 hunger, 12.8 saturation), and pumpkin pie fills more hunger per bite, but bread has advantages:
- No cooking. No furnace, no fuel.
- Easy to farm in bulk. One field and a hoe and you’re set for the whole game.
- It stacks to 64, so a stack carries a long way.
For the early game, a stack of bread is a better plan than chasing animals around.
Bread for villagers
Bread is also the easiest food for breeding villagers. A villager needs 3 bread to become willing to breed, and you give it to them by tossing it near them (they pick it up). Two willing villagers next to enough beds make a baby. Our villager breeding guide covers the beds and setup.
Farmer villagers also throw bread and wheat to other villagers on their own, which is how villages grow without your help.
Other uses for wheat
- 3 wheat = bread.
- 9 wheat = a hay bale, for storage or horse feed.
- Wheat is the breeding food for cows, sheep and goats, so a wheat field supports a cow farm as well.
- A cake uses 3 wheat with milk, sugar and an egg.
If you have spare bread, a composter takes it, but it’s usually better kept as food.
Common questions
Do you need a crafting table to make bread?
Yes. The three wheat go in a horizontal row, and the inventory grid is only two wide, so you need a crafting table.
How much hunger does bread restore?
5 hunger points (2.5 drumsticks) and 6 saturation.
How much bread do villagers need to breed?
Each villager needs to be willing, which takes 3 bread (or 12 carrots, potatoes or beetroots). Toss the food on the ground near them and they'll pick it up.
