How to Make a Cake in Minecraft: All 4 Ingredients

A cake needs 3 milk buckets, 2 sugar, 1 egg and 3 wheat on a crafting table: milk across the top row, sugar-egg-sugar across the middle, wheat across the bottom. You keep the three buckets. Cake can’t be eaten from your hand; you place it as a block and eat it slice by slice.

Gathering the ingredients

• Milk. Use an empty bucket on a cow, mooshroom or goat. All three go into the recipe at once, so you need three buckets (9 iron ingots).
• Sugar. Craft one sugar cane into one sugar. Two cane gets you the two sugar. A honey bottle also crafts into sugar.
• Egg. Chickens drop one every 5 to 10 minutes. If you have a chicken farm, divert some eggs before they reach the dispenser.
• Wheat. Grows from seeds on farmland. Harvest when the crop is fully grown and golden.

The milk is usually the last thing players have. Three buckets is a fair chunk of iron early on.

Eating it

Place the cake, then use it to eat a slice. There are 7 slices, each restoring 2 hunger. You can only eat when you’re not full. A whole cake is a lot of food, but it gives very little saturation, so you get hungry again soon. It’s also a block: you can’t carry a half-eaten cake, and breaking it gets you nothing back.

That makes cake great at a shared base or a farm, where anyone can grab a slice, and a poor choice for adventuring. For food you carry, bread and baked potatoes are far more practical. Pumpkin pie is the other dessert, and it does stack.

Candles and birthday builds

Use a candle on an uneaten cake to put it on top, then light it with flint and steel. Candles come in all 16 dye colors. Eating a slice knocks the candle off. Only one candle fits per cake.

Cake and redstone

A comparator placed against a cake gives a signal that drops as slices are eaten, from 14 for a full cake to 2 for the last slice. It’s a classic way to build a combination lock or a “how much is left” display.
