How to Breed Villagers in Minecraft: Beds, Food and Breeders

Villagers breed when they have enough food and a spare bed. How much food makes them willing, a simple breeder you can build fast, and fixes.

Two villagers breed on their own when they have enough food and there’s a free bed for the baby. You don’t feed them directly like cows. Instead you give them food by throwing it at them, they pick it up, and once both are “willing” and a spare bed exists, hearts appear and a baby pops out. The number of free beds is the real limit: no spare bed, no baby.

What villagers need

  • A spare bed for each baby. It must be unclaimed and have two blocks of air above it. A village with 4 villagers and 4 claimed beds won’t grow until you place a fifth bed. Making a bed needs 3 wool and 3 planks, so sheep are the usual bottleneck.
  • Food. A villager becomes willing once it holds 12 food points. That’s 3 bread, or 12 carrots, potatoes or beetroots. Throw the food on the ground near them (press Q on Java) and they’ll pick it up.
  • Time off work. Employed villagers won’t breed while they’re working. Nitwits and unemployed villagers don’t have that restriction.
  • No panic. A zombie or raid nearby will stop them.

On Java, breeding also fails if there’s no unclaimed bed the villagers can reach within 48 blocks. In practice, that just means: put the beds next to them.

A simple breeder

You don’t need redstone. The version most players build looks like this:

  1. Dig or build a small room, about 5×5, with a solid floor.
  2. Place 3 to 5 beds along one side, each with open space above.
  3. Bring two villagers in. Push them in with a boat or a minecart on rails if they won’t walk, or trap them as they path toward the beds.
  4. Make one of them a farmer by placing a composter in the room, and give it a small farmland patch with water. Farmers harvest and replant crops, and they share extra food with nearby villagers. Now the breeder feeds itself.
  5. Leave a gap or a 1-block-high opening the baby can walk through but adults can’t. Babies are under one block tall, so they slip out to a collection area while the parents stay put.

Once the babies are out, send them to wherever you need them: a trading hall, an iron farm, or a new village you’re building up.

Why breed at all

Two reasons. Most villages start with too few villagers to give you every villager job, and you want a lot of librarians to roll for the right enchanted books. Bred villagers are also unemployed, so you choose their job by placing a workstation.

If you want cheap trades as well, cure a zombie villager. Breeding gives you numbers; curing gives you discounts. Most trading halls use both.

Problems and fixes

Hearts appear but no baby. Not enough free beds, or the bed has a block above it.

No hearts at all. They haven’t eaten enough. Throw more bread, or check the farmer’s crops have actually grown.

Babies keep claiming beds. They will. Every baby claims a bed, so if your breeder fills up, move the babies out or add more beds.

Adults escape too. Check the baby exit. Keep it exactly 1 block tall; anything taller and the adults walk out with the babies.

Common questions

Why won't my villagers breed?

Usually it is the beds. Each baby needs its own unclaimed bed with two blocks of air above it. If the beds are fine, check that both villagers have enough food in their inventory and that no zombies are nearby.

Do villagers need jobs to breed?

No. Unemployed villagers and nitwits breed just as well. Employed villagers will not breed during their working hours, so breeding mostly happens around midday breaks and in the evening.

How long does a baby villager take to grow up?

About 20 minutes, one full Minecraft day. You cannot speed it up with food the way you can with other baby animals.

How often can villagers breed?

After breeding, a villager is not willing again for 5 minutes. With enough food and free beds, a pair keeps going until the beds run out.
