How to Make a Cow Farm in Minecraft for Steak and Leather
Two cows and a supply of wheat start a cow farm you can breed every 5 minutes. How to make a cow farm, from a simple pen to a Java cramming farm.
A cow farm is a fenced pen with at least two cows and a steady supply of wheat. Feed wheat to two adults, they make a calf, and every five minutes you can do it again. Kill the extras for steak (one of the best foods in the game) and leather (books, item frames, and eventually an enchanting setup).
Step 1: a pen that actually holds them
Build an enclosure with fences around a grassy patch. Eight by eight is plenty for a starter farm. Fences block mobs at 1.5 blocks high, so cows can’t jump them, and a fence gate gives you a way in. Light the inside with a couple of torches so hostile mobs don’t spawn in your pen at night.
To get cows home, hold wheat. Any cow within a few blocks follows you, and they’ll walk quite a long way. Lead them through the gate, close it, and you’re set. A lead works too if you have one.
Step 2: wheat supply
Cows breed with wheat only, so the farm is really a wheat farm with cows attached. Start a field next to the pen; the farming guide covers hydration and layout. One wheat per cow per breeding, so a herd of ten eats ten wheat every five minutes if you breed every round.
Step 3: breeding and culling
- Feed two adults: hearts appear and a calf spawns, along with a little XP.
- Wait 5 minutes before breeding those adults again.
- Keep 8-10 adults as breeding stock. Once the pen gets crowded, kill the surplus adults, never the calves you’ll need next round.
Use a sword with Looting for more beef and leather per cow. Each cow drops 0-2 leather and 1-3 raw beef; Looting III raises both caps by three.
Getting steak without a furnace
Mobs that die while on fire drop cooked meat. A sword with Fire Aspect gives you steak straight off the cow, which turns culling into a one-step job. You can also build a kill chamber where adults burn in lava or fire and drops fall into hoppers; those designs vary a lot by version, so copy a recent, tested one rather than guessing at the layout.
Java-only: the cramming farm
In Java Edition, more than 24 mobs in one block space take suffocation damage (“entity cramming”). Players exploit this with a 1x1 cell over a hopper: keep breeding cows into the cell and the extras die, dropping beef and leather into a chest below. It’s ugly but needs no redstone. Bedrock doesn’t have cramming damage, so this design does nothing there.
What the leather is for
Leather plus three paper makes a book, and books lead to bookshelves and enchanting. A modest cow farm is usually the main leather source for most survival worlds. If you want eggs and feathers too, a chicken farm pairs well with this one.
Common questions
What do cows eat in Minecraft?
Wheat. Hold it to make cows follow you, and feed it to two adults to breed them. Calves fed wheat grow up faster.
How often can you breed cows?
Each adult can breed once every 5 minutes. Calves take about 20 minutes to grow up on their own.
What is the best food from a cow farm?
Steak restores 8 hunger and 12.8 saturation, tied with cooked porkchop for the best everyday food. Golden carrots have more saturation but cost gold.
