Warden in Minecraft: How It's Summoned and How to Avoid It
The warden has 500 health and a sonic boom that ignores armor and shields. How sculk shriekers summon it, how it hunts by sound and smell, and escaping.

The warden is a blind, 500-health monster that lives under the deep dark. It only appears when you trigger a sculk shrieker too many times, it hunts by sound and smell, and it can kill a player in full netherite in two or three hits. The game is built for you to avoid it, not fight it.
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 500 HP (250 hearts) |
| Melee | 16 / 30 / 45 HP (Easy / Normal / Hard), disables shields |
| Sonic boom | 6 / 10 / 15 HP, ignores armor and shields |
| Knockback resistance | Total |
| Drops | 1 sculk catalyst |
| XP | 5 |
How a warden appears
Wardens never spawn on their own. In the deep dark, especially in ancient cities, you’ll find sculk shriekers: bone-white blocks with a soul pattern. A sculk sensor picking up a vibration, or you stepping on a shrieker, makes it shriek. Each shriek gives you Darkness and counts as a warning. The fourth warning summons a warden that digs out of the ground nearby.
Warnings fade over time if you stop making noise, so a slow, careful trip is safer than a rushed one.
How it finds you
The warden is blind. It tracks you two ways:
- Vibrations: footsteps, mining, placing blocks, opening chests, projectiles landing. Anything a sculk sensor would pick up.
- Smell: it sniffs periodically and picks up nearby players and mobs.
Sneaking stops your footsteps causing vibrations. It doesn’t stop smell. Every hit or disturbance raises its anger toward the source, and once anger reaches 80 it charges.
It also pulses Darkness to every player within 20 blocks every few seconds, which makes the lighting flicker down to almost nothing.
Getting away
Throwing things is your best friend. A snowball, an arrow or an egg landing somewhere else creates a vibration that pulls the warden toward it. Lots of players carry a stack of snowballs into ancient cities just for this.
If it’s already chasing you, run and keep running. Some tricks that help:
- Keep wool on your path if you can: walking on wool doesn’t create vibrations, and wool blocks vibrations from passing through.
- If it loses track of you for 60 seconds, it digs back into the ground and leaves.
The sonic boom has a range of about 15 blocks horizontally and goes through walls, so distance matters more than cover.
Can you kill it?
You can, with enough preparation, but the reward is a sculk catalyst and 5 XP. Players who try usually bring Strength II, full Protection IV netherite, and a stack of healing potions. It’s immune to fire and lava, can’t be knocked back, and won’t get into a boat or minecart, so the usual mob-trapping tricks fail. Edition differences
- Java has a game rule to stop warden spawns; Bedrock doesn’t.
- Thorns reduces sonic boom damage on Bedrock but not on Java.
- Mob contact angers a Bedrock warden much faster (80 anger vs 35).
The mobs hub covers the other underground threats.
Common questions
How do you summon the warden?
Set off a naturally generated sculk shrieker four times. Each activation counts as a warning, and the fourth summons a warden that digs up out of the ground nearby.
Can a shield block the warden's sonic boom?
No. The sonic boom ignores armor, shields and Protection, and passes through walls. Only the Resistance effect and a few rare cases reduce it.
What does the warden drop?
One sculk catalyst and 5 XP. That's all, which is why most players avoid fighting it.
Does sneaking stop the warden?
Sneaking stops it hearing your footsteps, but it can still smell you if you're close. Keep your distance as well as sneaking.
