Wolves are neutral pack animals that become the best combat pet in the game once tamed. A wild wolf has 8 health; tame it with bones and it jumps to 40 health, follows you everywhere, and fights whatever you fight. Since 1.20.5 there are nine coat variants and craftable wolf armor.

Stat Wild Tamed
Health 8 HP (4 hearts) 40 HP (20 hearts)
Damage Java 3 / 4 / 6 HP, Bedrock 2 / 3 / 4.5 HP 4 HP on any difficulty
Food Bones (to tame it) Any meat except fish (heals it, starts breeding)
Drops Nothing but 1-3 XP Wolf armor, if worn

Where wolves spawn

Each variant has its own home biome:

Variant Biome Pack size
Pale Taiga 4
Ashen Snowy taiga 4
Black Old growth pine taiga 2-4
Chestnut Old growth spruce taiga 2-4
Rusty Sparse jungle 2-4
Snowy Grove 1
Spotted Savanna plateau 4-8
Striped Wooded badlands 4-8
Woods Forest 4

The savanna and badlands packs are big, and wild wolves in those numbers will tear you apart if you hit one. Wolves near a biome border can take the neighboring variant.

Wild wolf behavior

Wild wolves leave you alone unless you attack one, and then the whole pack turns on you. They hunt sheep, rabbits, foxes, baby turtles and every type of skeleton, which is why skeletons run when they see one. They give llamas a wide berth since llamas spit at them.

Taming

Feed a wild wolf bones; each bone has a one in three chance to tame it. A tamed wolf gets a red collar, sits when you use it, and teleports to you when it falls more than 12 blocks behind. Step-by-step instructions, including how to get bones early, are in how to tame a wolf. Dye a tamed wolf to change its collar color.

Wolf armor

Wolf armor is crafted from six armadillo scutes and only fits tamed adult wolves. It absorbs almost all damage until its 64 durability runs out, and you repair it by using more scutes on the wolf (8 durability each). It doesn’t block drowning, freezing, magic or Wither damage. Shears take it off, and it drops when the wolf dies. With armor on, a wolf survives creepers, falls and most fights that used to kill pets.

What tamed wolves attack

Anything you hit, and anything that hits you, except creepers and ghasts. That’s good for you in most fights. It’s bad around villages or other players’ pets: hit a cat or a villager by mistake and your wolves join in. Make wolves sit before you do anything risky near animals you care about.

Healing and breeding

Any meat heals a tamed wolf. Rotten flesh heals 8 HP and doesn’t poison wolves, so stockpile it from zombies. To breed, feed any meat to two tamed adults at full health. The pup is tamed and takes after one parent’s variant.

Edition differences

  • Wild wolves hit harder on Java than on Bedrock.
  • On Bedrock, about 10% of wild spawns are pups and you can heal untamed wolves with food.
  • Breeding cooldown is five minutes on Java and one minute on Bedrock.

Wolves pair well with a cat, which keeps phantoms and creepers away. See every pet on the mobs hub.

Common questions

How many wolf variants are there?

Nine: pale, ashen, black, chestnut, rusty, snowy, spotted, striped and woods. Each spawns in its own biome, and the variant stays the same when you tame it.

How do you heal a tamed wolf?

Feed it any meat, including rotten flesh, which wolves can eat safely. Its tail drops lower the more hurt it is.

Will a tamed wolf attack creepers?

No. Tamed wolves attack whatever you attack and anything that hurts you, except creepers and ghasts.
