Rabbit stats in Minecraft: health 3 HP (1.5 hearts); spawns Deserts, snowy biomes, flower forests, meadows, taigas and more; food Carrots, golden carrots, dandelions; drops Rabbit hide, raw rabbit, rabbit's foot (10%); xp 1-7 from breeding.

Rabbits are small, fast passive mobs with just 3 health (one and a half hearts). They hop away from you, eat your carrots, and drop rabbit hide, raw rabbit and, rarely, a rabbit’s foot, the only ingredient for Potions of Leaping.

Stat Value
Health 3 HP (1.5 hearts)
Spawns Deserts, snowy biomes, flower forests, meadows, taigas and more
Food Carrots, golden carrots, dandelions
Drops Rabbit hide, raw rabbit, rabbit’s foot (10%)
XP 1-7 from breeding

Colors and where they live

The coat depends on the biome:

  • Gold in deserts.
  • White and white splotched in snowy biomes.
  • Brown, salt-and-pepper and black in most other places where rabbits spawn.

Babies inherit a parent’s color, so you can build a herd of any coat you’ve caught. There’s also a hidden skin: name a rabbit “Toast” with a name tag and it gets a black-and-white Dutch pattern, a tribute to a player’s lost pet rabbit. Its babies don’t keep the pattern.

Catching and breeding

Rabbits run from any player within eight blocks unless you’re holding something they eat. Hold a carrot or dandelion and they’ll follow you instead. Walk them into a fenced pen, feed two adults, and a baby appears. Babies take 20 minutes to grow, and feeding them speeds it up.

Wild foxes and wolves hunt rabbits, so a pen near a forest needs a full fence.

Rabbits in your farm

When mob griefing is on, rabbits eat fully grown carrot crops, knocking them back a growth stage. A loose rabbit next to a carrot farm will slowly ruin it. Fence your crops, or put the rabbit pen away from the field.

Drops and what they’re good for

  • Rabbit hide: four make one leather, handy if there are no cows around.
  • Raw rabbit: cook it for 5 hunger, or make rabbit stew, which restores 10.
  • Rabbit’s foot: 10% base chance on a player or tamed-wolf kill, up to about 19% with Looting III. Brew it into an awkward potion for Leaping.

Killing a baby gives nothing, so breed them up first.

The Killer Bunny

On Java, /summon rabbit with variant 99 (evil) creates the Killer Bunny, a white rabbit with red eyes, 8 armor and an 8-damage bite on Normal. It’s a Monty Python joke and has never spawned naturally in a modern version. Bedrock doesn’t have it at all.

Edition differences

  • Bedrock rabbits spawn in a few extra cold biomes such as frozen rivers and snowy beaches; Java adds old-growth taigas.
  • Bedrock drop chances are rolled per item (50% each for hide, raw and cooked meat).
  • Bedrock baby rabbits follow their parents.

Other small animals are listed on the mobs hub.

Common questions

How do you breed rabbits?

Feed two adults carrots, golden carrots or dandelions. Hold the food to stop them running away, then lead them into a fenced pen before breeding.

What is the rabbit's foot used for?

Brewing Potions of Leaping. Each rabbit has a 10% chance to drop one when killed by a player or tamed wolf, rising to about 19% with Looting III.

Is the Killer Bunny still in Minecraft?

Only on Java, and only through the summon command. It never spawns naturally and doesn't exist on Bedrock.
