Minecraft Troubleshooting: Fix Crashes, Lag and Join Errors
Most Minecraft problems are one of three: it won't start or crashes, it runs badly, or you can't connect. Java and Bedrock fixes, quickest checks first.
Most Minecraft problems fall into three groups: the game won’t start or crashes, it runs badly, or you can’t connect to someone. Each has a different cause, so the first step is always to pin down which one you’ve got. Our guides list fixes from quickest to most drastic, and none of them start with “reinstall everything”.
Pick your problem
The launcher won’t open, the game crashes on start, or it freezes on the loading screen. Go to Minecraft won’t launch. It covers the Java launcher, Bedrock on Windows, and mobile, and shows how to read a Java crash report to find the mod or driver at fault.
The game runs, but it’s choppy, stutters, or blocks pop back after you break them. That’s lag, and there are three kinds: low FPS (your device), high ping (your connection) and low TPS (the server). How to fix Minecraft lag helps you tell them apart and fix each one.
Your friend can’t join your Bedrock world, or you get “Unable to connect to world”. Can’t connect to a friend’s world goes through the account settings, NAT and version checks in order.
A server won’t let you in. Errors like “Outdated client”, “Connection refused” or “not whitelisted” are covered in how to join a Minecraft server.
Three checks that fix a surprising amount
- Update the game. Version mismatches cause connection errors and a lot of mod crashes. How to update Minecraft covers every platform.
- Update your graphics driver on PC. Outdated drivers are behind many crashes and black screens, especially after a Windows update.
- Test without mods or packs. On Java, launch a plain vanilla installation. On Bedrock, deactivate global resource packs. If the problem disappears, add things back one at a time.
When to ask for help
If you’ve worked through the relevant guide and nothing changed, Mojang’s own support is the right next step for account, purchase and login problems; see official Minecraft support for where to go. Account access problems specifically are covered in the accounts and security hub. When you ask anyone for help, include your edition, game version, platform and the exact error text. Those four details answer most of the first questions anyone will ask.
