Parrots ride your shoulder, dance to music and copy hostile mobs within 20 blocks. Where to find all five parrot colors, taming one, and the cookie rule.

Parrot stats in Minecraft: health 6 HP (3 hearts); colors Red, blue, green, cyan, gray; tamed with Seeds (wheat, melon, pumpkin, beetroot, torchflower) or pitcher pods; drops 1-2 feathers; xp 1-3.

Parrots are small passive birds from the jungle. Tame one with seeds and it rides on your shoulder, dances when music plays, and imitates the sounds of hostile mobs within 20 blocks, which turns it into an early warning system. They can’t breed, and a cookie kills them.

Stat Value
Health 6 HP (3 hearts)
Spawns Jungle and bamboo jungle (plus sparse jungle on Bedrock), 1-2 at a time
Colors Red, blue, green, cyan, gray
Tamed with Seeds (wheat, melon, pumpkin, beetroot, torchflower) or pitcher pods
Drops 1-2 feathers
XP 1-3

Finding and taming

Parrots perch in jungle trees and flutter down to the ground, so listen for their chatter while you walk. Each seed you feed has a 1 in 10 chance to tame it; when hearts appear it’s yours. The full process, including how to bring a tamed parrot home without losing it, is on how to tame a parrot.

Once tamed, a parrot can sit (use it with an empty hand) or follow you like a wolf, teleporting to catch up.

Shoulder riding

Walk into a standing tame parrot, or let it fly to you, and it lands on a shoulder. You can carry two, one per side. It jumps off when you take damage, fall more than a short drop, swim, sleep or glide with an elytra, so you’ll be picking it back up often on long trips. On Bedrock, a parrot on your shoulder stops you from entering a Nether portal, which catches a lot of players out.

Mob mimicry

This is the useful part. A parrot near a hostile mob sometimes makes that mob’s sound at a higher pitch: a hiss for a creeper, a groan for a zombie, rattling bones for a skeleton. On your shoulder it works like a radar while you’re mining. It doesn’t happen on Peaceful, and the list of imitated mobs differs a bit between Java and Bedrock.

Dancing

Play a music disc in a jukebox and parrots within three blocks start dancing until the song ends. Bedrock parrots can even dance on your shoulder. Note blocks don’t trigger it, but they’re still worth building for parrot rooms and note block songs.

Never feed a parrot a cookie. On Java it dies on the spot; on Bedrock it’s poisoned and dies within seconds. There’s no way to undo it.

Drops

1-2 feathers on death. On Java, Looting raises that to as many as five; on Bedrock it stays at 1-2. Killing a parrot for feathers makes little sense when chickens drop them and breed.

The mobs hub lists the other tameable animals.

Common questions

Can parrots breed in Minecraft?

No. There are no baby parrots, and seeds only tame them. Every parrot you own was found in a jungle.

Why did my parrot die when I gave it a cookie?

Cookies are poisonous to parrots, a nod to chocolate being toxic to real birds. On Java it dies instantly; on Bedrock it gets Fatal Poison and dies a few seconds later.

What colors can parrots be?

Red, blue, green, cyan and gray. The color is picked at random when the parrot spawns and never changes.
