Goat in Minecraft: Ramming and How to Get All 8 Horns
Goats ram anything standing still, and a ram into the right block snaps off a horn. How to get all eight goat horns, milk a goat, and stay on the mountain.

Goats are neutral mountain mobs that jump very high and every so often charge at anything standing still, knocking it back several blocks. On a snowy peak that knockback is the real danger. When a goat rams certain solid blocks instead, it can snap off a horn, which drops as a goat horn item you can play.

Where goats live
Goats spawn in groups of two or three on the high mountain biomes: snowy slopes, jagged peaks and frozen peaks. These sit at the top of mountain ranges, often well above Y 150 (our page on world size and height explains the build limits). About 5% spawn as kids.
The ram
Every 30 seconds to 5 minutes, a goat picks a target that isn’t moving, from 4 to 16 blocks away: you, another mob, even an armor stand. It lowers its head, stomps, and charges. If you step aside in time, it misses and stops after a couple of blocks.
The damage is small. The knockback is not. On a mountain ridge, a hit can push you off a cliff. Keep moving when goats are around, stay away from edges, or hold wheat, which makes a goat stop its charge and walk to you instead.
Goats can’t be angered by hitting them, and most mobs don’t fight back when rammed. Piglins, hoglins, zoglins, wardens and withers do.
Goat horns
When an adult goat rams stone, a log, packed ice, or coal, iron, copper or emerald ore, it loses a horn, which drops as an item. Goats don’t regrow horns, so each goat gives at most two, and 10% of goats spawn with only one.
Each horn plays one of eight sounds:
- Normal goats: Ponder, Sing, Seek, Feel
- Screaming goats: Admire, Call, Yearn, Dream
To farm horns, pen goats near a pillar of stone or a log and stand so the pillar is between you and the goat. If you’d rather not wait, every pillager outpost chest holds a goat horn too.
Screaming goats
Two percent of goats are screaming goats. They look identical but scream instead of bleat and try to ram every 5 to 15 seconds. Breeding two screamers almost always gives another screamer; one screamer and one normal goat gives a 50% chance.
Milk and breeding
Use a bucket on an adult goat to fill it with milk. That’s the same milk a cow gives, so drinking it clears all your status effects.
Hold wheat and goats follow you. Feed two adults to breed them and get 1-7 XP. A kid takes 20 minutes to grow; wheat speeds it up. Goats can leap up to ten blocks high when crossing gaps, which is how they get around their mountain homes so quickly.
Common questions
How do you get a goat horn?
Get an adult goat to ram a stone, log, packed ice, coal ore, iron ore, copper ore or emerald ore block. Each goat can drop up to two horns. Pillager outposts also have them in chests.
What is a screaming goat?
A rare goat (2% of spawns) that looks normal but makes screaming sounds, rams far more often and drops four different goat horn sounds.
Can you milk a goat?
Yes. Use an empty bucket on an adult goat to get a milk bucket, the same as a cow.
