Hoglins are big tusked pigs that roam crimson forests in herds and attack you on sight. Their charge launches you upward, which is how a lot of players end up in lava. Hoglins are also the Nether’s food animal: each one drops two to four porkchops, and you can breed them with crimson fungus.

Where hoglins live

Crimson forests are the only biome where hoglins spawn naturally, at any light level. Bastion remnants of the hoglin stable type also generate with them. About 20% spawn as babies in Java (5% in Bedrock).

How they attack

A hoglin goes for any player within 16 blocks. Its tusk swipe throws you up in Java, and a shield doesn’t stop the launch, only the damage. Adult damage varies a lot per hit, so a herd can take you down fast. Hitting one makes the whole herd join in.

Fighting tips:

  • Keep lava out of the picture. Fight on flat ground away from edges and lava lakes.
  • Use an axe or a strong sword. 40 health is a lot; an axe’s burst damage helps.
  • Use their fear. Hoglins avoid warped fungus, active Nether portals and respawn anchors within seven blocks. Place a warped fungus on the ground or carry one to plant in front of you, and a hoglin will turn and run.

Baby hoglins hit much weaker and run when you hit them. They’re the only baby animal that drops XP when killed.

Hoglins and piglins

Piglins hunt hoglins, and hoglins fight back as a group. When one side outnumbers the other, the smaller group retreats. Piglins don’t hunt the hoglins that generate inside bastions. You’ll also see baby piglins riding baby hoglins, sometimes three high.

Breeding and farming

Feed two adults crimson fungus to breed them. The baby takes 20 minutes to grow. Feeding a hoglin also stops it from despawning.

A hoglin farm works like a cow farm, only in the Nether: pen a pair, breed them, and kill the adults. Each gives two to four porkchops and maybe leather. Fire Aspect or lava cooks the porkchops as they drop.

Zombification

Take a hoglin out of the Nether, into the Overworld or the End, and it shakes for 15 seconds and becomes a zoglin. Zoglins attack nearly everything, can’t be bred and only drop rotten flesh. Don’t drag a hoglin through a portal unless you mean to.

Hoglins can be led on a lead, and while leashed they don’t attack you, which is the safe way to move a breeding pair.

Common questions

What scares hoglins away?

Warped fungus (even in a flower pot), a lit Nether portal and a respawn anchor. Hoglins avoid coming within seven blocks of any of them.

How do you breed hoglins?

Feed two adult hoglins crimson fungus. They won't breed while they're running from warped fungus, a portal or a respawn anchor.

What happens if you bring a hoglin to the Overworld?

It shakes for 15 seconds and turns into a zoglin, which attacks almost every mob and can't be bred.
