Evokers are spellcasting illagers found in woodland mansions and late raid waves. They don’t fight with weapons: they summon rows of fangs from the ground and call in flying vexes. Every evoker drops a totem of undying, the item that saves you from death once, so they’re the most valuable kill most players make.

Where to find evokers

Woodland mansions generate evokers in certain rooms on the second and third floors. Those are a one-time supply; mansions never respawn them. Clearing a mansion usually gives you a handful of totems.

Raids are the repeatable source. Evokers join from wave 5, and on Hard they can show up riding a ravager from wave 7. A raid farm that triggers raids over and over is how players stockpile dozens of totems.

The two spells

Fangs. Purple-grey particles and a low sound mean fangs are coming. If you’re more than three blocks away, the evoker summons a line of 16 fangs straight toward you. If you’re close, it surrounds itself with two rings of fangs. The fangs spawn on the ground and don’t track you, so sidestep the line. They ignore armor, though Protection enchantments still reduce them.

Vexes. Lighter particles and a higher sound for two seconds, then three vexes appear. Vexes fly through walls and hit hard. An evoker can keep summoning while fewer than eight vexes are nearby.

Evokers also flee if you get within ten blocks and they aren’t mid-cast, so they spend a lot of the fight running.

How to kill one quickly

  • Rush it. It has 24 health. Close the distance and hit it hard; a few sword or axe hits end it, and the vexes vanish soon after their summoner dies.
  • Kill it before vexes stack up. The longer the fight runs, the more vexes you face.
  • Use the terrain. Fangs can’t appear on top of high walls or in deep pits. Fighting from a raised position makes the fang line fizzle.
  • Bring a bow for vexes. They’re small and fast, so a quick shot often beats swinging at them.

An evoker hit in a group alerts every evoker within 12 blocks, even through walls, so expect the whole room to start casting.

The totem of undying

Hold the totem in either hand and it activates when you’d otherwise die: you’re left with 1 health plus Regeneration II, Absorption II and Fire Resistance. It works against lava, long falls, explosions and mob attacks alike. Keep one in your offhand for dangerous fights like the Wither.

Evokers that spawn as raid captains also drop their ominous banner and an ominous bottle.

The evoker’s other habit is the “wololo” spell: out of combat, it changes nearby blue sheep to red. It’s a nod to the priests in Age of Empires, and it only matters if you keep blue sheep near a mansion.

Common questions

Do evokers always drop a totem of undying?

Yes. Every evoker drops one totem of undying when it dies, regardless of what killed it. Java evokers can also drop an emerald on a player kill.

Do evokers respawn in woodland mansions?

No. Mansion evokers only spawn when the mansion generates. Raids are the renewable source.

What is the wololo evoker?

When not fighting, evokers turn nearby blue sheep red with a spell that makes a 'wololo' sound, a reference to the priests in Age of Empires.
