Vindicator in Minecraft: How to Survive the Axe Illager
Vindicators swing iron axes for 13 damage on Normal and 19.5 on Hard. Where they spawn, which raid waves bring them, drops, and the Johnny name tag.
Vindicators are the axe-wielding illagers from woodland mansions and raids. They have 24 health and run at you with an iron axe that hits for 13 on Normal and 19.5 on Hard. In plain iron armor, two or three hits is a dead player, so treat every vindicator as the most dangerous thing in the room.

Where you meet them
Woodland mansions. Vindicators generate in groups of one to three on every floor, often with an evoker nearby. They don’t respawn, so once a mansion is cleared it stays cleared.
Raids. They become more common in later waves and on higher difficulties. From wave 6, raid vindicators can carry Sharpness II axes. On Java, some ride ravagers.
Patrols (Java only). A vindicator near a patrol captain can join the patrol, though patrols never spawn with them.
Fighting a vindicator
Vindicators are fast and hit hard but have no ranged attack. That gives you two good options:
- Keep distance. A bow or crossbow kills one before it reaches you if you start shooting early. In a mansion corridor, back up while you shoot.
- Use the doorway. Stand behind a closed door or a block gap and hit them as they come through. On Normal and Hard, raid vindicators can break wooden doors, so iron doors are safer.
A shield blocks the axe swing, but each axe hit disables the shield for 5 seconds. Block, then strafe and hit back rather than standing there with the shield raised.
Diamond armor with Protection makes vindicators manageable. Before that, fight them one at a time.
Drops
- Emerald: 0-1, more with Looting.
- Iron axe: 8.5% chance, sometimes enchanted.
- Ominous banner and ominous bottle if it was wearing a captain’s banner.
They’re not a great emerald source compared with trading, but every raid wave adds up.
Johnny
Name a vindicator “Johnny” with a name tag and it turns on almost everything: animals, golems and most hostile mobs. It’s a reference to The Shining. It still won’t attack other illagers. Johnny vindicators make fun arena fights and occasionally useful mob-clearing tools.
Edition differences
- Java vindicators call other vindicators for help and can open wooden doors like villagers.
- Bedrock vindicators sprint even when wandering and are also hostile to snow golems.
- A rung bell highlights nearby raiders with Glowing on Java.

Common questions
What happens if you name a vindicator Johnny?
It attacks almost every mob nearby, not just players and villagers. Illagers are the main exception. Use a name tag to try it.
Where do vindicators spawn?
In woodland mansions, where they don't respawn, and in raids. On Java they can also tag along with pillager patrols.
Can a shield block a vindicator's axe?
It blocks the hit, but an axe strike disables your shield for 5 seconds, so don't rely on holding it up the whole fight.
